gah...this looks great...!
I've been trying to do some inking but so far I didn't make much progress... Can't seem to get a grasp on it.
Your inkings look very great, I enjoy seeing the strokes, so well controlled.. *u*
And the picture itself too..

Thank you very much! I absolutely love india ink. It's my very favourite medium. It does, I will readily admit, take a while to get the hang of, and even once that happens, it only really does just what you want it to half the time. The truth of the matter is that you only have marginal control over it, but that can be a double-edged sword . . . On the plus side, when it feels like behaving, it'll do half the work for you ^_^
Anyway, I hope you'll continue working with it and enjoying it and I wish you luck! And thank you, again, for the comment ^_^

ooooh, I love sumi e! I got a kit for it years ago and I used to love playing with it. I was never any good but it was so much fun! This is gorgeous! Where did you get the inks from? I always felt that part of the problem was the ink I was using- it would never get dark enough.

Hmm, I've never actually tried sumi ink, but I've heard it is lovely! My weapon of choice has always been India ink. As I was telling , you only have so much control over this medium, so it really is just about getting a feel for how it behaves and working round its idiosyncrasies. Also, I'm not sure about Sumi or what varieties it comes in, but whenever I work with non-waterproof ink, I can never get it dark enough. Non-waterproof ink blends more softly and tends to have a cooler palette, and it stays greyer, whereas waterproof gives me crisp edges, a warmer tone and strong, rich darks. Also, it's really more about the water that you use with it than the ink itself, I find. Learning how certain ink/water ratios look and how ink behaves on paper when water is dropped onto it/brushed over it, etc is all key and such.
. . . Can you tell I'm trying to encourage you to keep at it? I hope you will! Ink is my very favourite medium and I want to help other people enjoy it as much as I do! ^__^
