omgomgomgomg... I've been working on this for four days.
Four DAYS.
Sketch.
Lineart.
Colour.
Shade and finish.
Four perfectly cut stages of a picture's development and it took me a day for each of them.

Anyway this is a pic i have been getting increasingly hyped for over the last few days. This is quite obviously a Drider. I haven't drawn one in a while. i felt like trying it again. every now and then I get days where i just can't stop daydreaming about fantasy creatures and sometimes it's one creature specifically more than the others. some days i'm into mermaids, other days i can't get an obsession with centaurs out of my head. the other day I kept thinking of Driders.
Anyway this scene was born. needs a little explaining.

It's set in a scene that's a frequent returner in my daydreams. was just a pretty simple one with no real backstory... but it was a fantasy world with humans in it and there is this facility built into a small mountain by a small town surrounded by forest. this facility is there to experiment on turning people into creatures, and below it exists a huge maze of ventilation tunnels that vents the excess gasses before they are properly and harmlessly dispersed. The first incarnation of this daydream was about a guy exploring with his partner because they'd had disappearances in the town, and turns out whenever they wandered into the forest just up the hill, right outside an entrance to one of these tunnels, turns out they'd been turning into centaurs, and too ashamed to go home so they run off. The character explored and tried to cover his breath with cloth but couldn't get through the first door in time and turned into a centaur.
The tunnels are a huge maze with different sections all that vent different gasses corresponding to different species. there are neutral zones filled with clean oxygen and airlocks in between each one. you can very easily get lost in them.
But the strange thing is, despite being so cold and metal looking, they show hints of design choices that make them look like they should be inhabitable, hence the benches on the walls. one area in the middle (neutral zone) is even set up like a bar, presumably for different specieses to hang out. presumably these tunnels were meant to be filled with the successful experiments for a while.

Anywho this girl was in the wrong place at the wrong time and fell into the tunnels, as some people do. she'd managed to dodge the ventilation for a while by figuring out how to vent the rooms from the airlock before she entered them but sometimes they entered sudden routine venting cycles. she had managed to escape until she got trapped in this room.
In the original daydream this particular scene came from she was with someone, someone else who was exploring the tunnels (after all it wasn't unheard of). They got seperated, this friend had the power to force the vents to stop but by the time they forced the airlock open....

I haven't settled on a name completely yet but I'm thinking of Saphir, french for Sapphire.
Because of her eyes. well, I originally went for "deep crystally" for her eyes but it was good but not good enough so i made them a much simpler style with the feel of "blue flame". I dunno, I just reeeally like how her eyes look. all of her in fact.
yep she's gonna be a proper character from now on. she''s here to stay.

Poor Saphir, she's defeated, devastated. she thinks it's all over. she struggled in vein but couldn't stop the transformation. she can never go back to her old life now. she's lost everything.
but despair over her situation can only cover up fascination about her new body for so long. and don't you worry... She won't be crying once she looks into her reflection and realises how beautiful she is.

I won't go into explaining any specifics about the incarnation of the species in my art, that will be once I've finished the Kyrinos races bestiary.
I am SOOOOO Happy with how this has come out omg! you see before you the first picture of my new art style to make it to deviantart. I consider this my best piece of anime and fantasy art yet.
So I can only hope that all of you love it as much as I do!
