Gonna speak from experience here, I actually got 'coached' due to my lack of initiative when it came to driving sales. So yeah, he's just going through the motions incase his boss is observing him. Also, he may do it out of habit, again speaking from experience, I am used to responding as an employee when I am off the clock and just shopping.
