I was hesitate of doing this painting. I've painted one Chinese lady, now I'm painting another one... When I was in art school, I was told the worst thing for an artist is to repeat him/herself. A true artist always strike to create something different, to push the limit, to trying new subject, new style... The moment you repeat yourself is the moment you stop growing, it's the moment you die as an artist.Powerful speech, right~ LOL. yeah, and it landed in my stupid and idealistic heart. And I've always trying my very best to always trying new things, keep learning keep growing...
So when I started this painting, I was afraid that this is the moment I repeat myself, and this is the moment I die as an artist.
And then I remembered... I don't really care about growing as an artist, not anymore. I just want to paint and have fun. So I paint Chinese girls twice, or 300 times, as long as I'm happy, I'll keep painting it. And if I get bored (which is very likely), I'll paint something else.
So I finished this painting, and I'm not sure what I'll paint next.
Oh, and... Merry Christmas.

Well... We all get into art because we love painting, sculpting, or creating art. but that's the difference between art as a hobby and art as a career.
I was told my subject matter is too narrow, my technique is not good enough, basically, just whole bunch of big words for saying "your art sucks". Well, we've all been there, we all walk that path. Apparently, according to some expert, Art is hard work, is a struggle, is painful, it's freaking labor intensive, if you're not crying and mutilating your ego and say "I want to get better because I suck", you're not a good artist and you'll never grow as an artist, and you'll never be a good artist.
yeah.... I've been there, and I cried, I struggled, I hated myself for being a lame painter, who didn't paint 80 hours a week.
Now, I'm at peace with myself. I paint what I want to paint, and I have fun, and that's it.

Well you know what I think about what your art school told you about repeating yourself? I say, even if you repeat what you do, as long as you reinvent the way you do it, you're still an amazing artist.

But the truth is, I don't care if I'm an good artist or not. I really just want to paint or draw and have fun. Being an good artist is so depressing.

I like it in all ways, well except her eyebrows, mostly becase theyre not symmetric, I know I know, we're not symmetric in any way in real life but thats mostly why we try so hard to reach the symmetry and the perfection in our drawings (or is it just me going crazy?), but yeah, awesome work! Her face is definitely not Chinese. Her costume is not really Chinese either... LOL just kind of sort of Chinese.
The asymmetrical thing, yeah, I never flip facial feature even when the subject facing forward. Like you said, human face is not symmetrical, and a truly symmetrical face is creepy and unnatural.
