Well, one layer is actually not that hard, once you get pass the fear. It's just like oil paint, whatever you screw up, just cover it up. and it gives you a much nicer transaction between different area, texture, and light and shadow. It's pretty cool! I'm glad I work my fear out of this.

Yeah, I began painting with a max of about 2 or 3 layers about a year ago.
I think its made my work stronger treating it more like a "real" painting. Usually tho the other layers are just texture or lighting layers that are quickly merged.
I really like the style change. Its a bit looser than your usual stuff and looks a bit more like real paint.
My only crit is the heavy line around the lips. Makes them look less natural. Even if you had lip liner on like that, I would omit it.
Otherwise, really great!

thanks!!! I think I'll do something to that lip line~
I think the best way is probably doing a bit of both, paint in different layers, but merging them constantly and paint on the merged layer and then create separate layers for new part...

I remember the first time I tried to seriously try out minimal-layer painting...
Now I'm addicted to it, it causes problems sometimes D:
I quite like the lighting and bold brush strokes here.

I have a habit of painting over mistakes rather than using Undo or messing with the layers, so using only a few layers actually makes fixing mistakes easier for me xP I think that's one of my few good habits.
But yah~ Painting on one layer really feels more like painting.

LOL, now that's a challenge....I was never really good at painting shinny/metal/sci-fi stuff.
