Description Self portrait created for the international self portrait day~~~ I tried new brush and new way to paint this one, and totally had fun with it. And I look cool as terminatrix~~~ yeah~~~~

Hasta la vista, baby~~~

What's special about this one, i mean other than i make myself a terminatrix.... is that, I finished painting in one layer. I often do background, skin, clothing, and hair in different layer, but this time, I try to paint in a more "traditional" way, so everything is in one layer. Of course, the eye effect, the texture, and the little text bubble are in different layers. I think I like how this goes, I'll try something more like this.

Wooow! I'm really impressed this is on only one layerβ€”I mean, I'm impressed by you in general, but I always have a special bit of respect for people who can do it all in just one go, if you know what I mean.

Your technique for painting skin is so gorgeouuus~~<3

Well, one layer is actually not that hard, once you get pass the fear. It's just like oil paint, whatever you screw up, just cover it up. and it gives you a much nicer transaction between different area, texture, and light and shadow. It's pretty cool! I'm glad I work my fear out of this.

Thanks!!! I just got ground pretty bad by Jason Manley at the portfolio review...(I'm not complaining...LOL), it's nice to hear something good.

You're most welcome!
Jason Manley crew might be right about some things but you are a very talented artist with lots of potential.
Don't you dare to not being damn proud about your accomplishments!

Thanks That really means a lot from a fellow artist. You should see me at the review, i can barely type (it's life stream, we type our question and responds). it's pathetic. But the advice he gave is really priceless, you can't get that anywhere else. I need to completely redo my portfolio. And I need to work harder... and I need to be more focus... and I need to find a "whatever job" to pay the bills for now~~~LOL~

Anyway, thanks man!

Yeah, I began painting with a max of about 2 or 3 layers about a year ago.
I think its made my work stronger treating it more like a "real" painting. Usually tho the other layers are just texture or lighting layers that are quickly merged.

I really like the style change. Its a bit looser than your usual stuff and looks a bit more like real paint.
My only crit is the heavy line around the lips. Makes them look less natural. Even if you had lip liner on like that, I would omit it.
Otherwise, really great!

thanks!!! I think I'll do something to that lip line~

I think the best way is probably doing a bit of both, paint in different layers, but merging them constantly and paint on the merged layer and then create separate layers for new part...

I remember the first time I tried to seriously try out minimal-layer painting...
Now I'm addicted to it, it causes problems sometimes D:

I quite like the lighting and bold brush strokes here.

thank you I guess the problem of one layer painting is that if you screw up, you screw up for good... LOL... just like oil painting.

I have a habit of painting over mistakes rather than using Undo or messing with the layers, so using only a few layers actually makes fixing mistakes easier for me xP I think that's one of my few good habits.

But yah~ Painting on one layer really feels more like painting.

You look cute! Good job on color dynamics, volume and space.
Single layer paintings are fiddly though, but blend way better and got that painterly feel to them.

thanks I want to try more one layer thing, I really like the painterly feel of it. And I think it's just another style, I practice more, I'll get better at it.
