How Soul Eater (manga) should have ended!

Thank you for making this. I was SO VERY distraught when I found out that Crona was stuck on the Moon.

Yeah! The manga ending left me so unsatisfied, I can not describe my unhappiness towards it (even though it is just fiction). Crona deserved MUCH better in that manga ending. At least there were some good stuff from it (like how Stein and Marie got in a relationship), but it will not help my bitter feelings for it [the manga ending].

when the ending first went up, half the fandom thought it was a prank chapter, with good reason honestly

yeah, that really was not a good ending. it was the kind of ending where the creator wanted to have his cake and eat it too. where he wanted a bittersweet ending but it clashed so much with the rest of the manga that instead it ended up like it did. where its clear that this plotline would get resolution in the future, but that it ended before that resolution was reached, so its bittersweet... because if the story had gone on for a while longer it'dd be a completely happy ending. and thats not even getting started on the bloody "comedy" in the first half of the final chapter.
kid's coronation was rather nice though. ill give it that.
as for asura.... yeah, he really didnt live up to his hype. oh, his powers did, and to his credit he never became like aizen, where he'd pull out completely new powers with no foreshadowing to avoid defeat. but personality wise, manga Asura turned out to be really bland. we were promised that asura was this massive coward, that the reason he got so damn powerfull(not counting that he's a unawakened shinigami) was that he started eating souls(and his own weapon) to try and become so strong that nothing of what terrified him would be able to hurt ever again, but on the moon, he never comes across as coward. ever. there are some moments where he feigns fear towards kid and blackstar, but thats it. other than that moment in his introduction where eruka's scream makes him terrified, there wasnt a moment in the entire damn manga where this guy showed genuine fear.
then there's the fact that we didnt even get to see his final defeat, even though its made pretty clear that both kid and his father CAN die(hell, shinigami did die in the manga) somehow asura is completely immortal, despite the other two death gods not being so bloody indestructable.
people bitch about asura going down like a punk in the anime, but you know what? at least there he had a unique personality that separated him from the rest of the uber powerfull shonen villains. also, now that we know exactly what he was, his death in the anime made much more sense.

I AGREE WITH ALL OF THIS 800%
That's a good point, I hadn't thought about that! In the anime it was more realistically "Another kishin will rise because there is always fear in the world" but in the manga it's just "I'M IMMORTAL SUCKERS even though I was supposed to be a Reaper and Reapers can clearly die if they're replaced..." In that case, Asura should have died for good the second Crona replaced him.
Honestly the anime has always made more sense to me. The aesthetic feels so much more...together. In the manga it's like you're watching the strings of several different comics interact.

I think Okubo didn't want to make Maka and the others kill Crona, since he's made it clear that they (or at least Maka) want to save him. Though the whole immortal thing is annoying.

He MIGHT have wanted the others to kill Crona, honestly, but maybe his editor warned against it. I've heard that Crona was his least favorite character.

AM I THE ONLY ONE AROUND HERE
WHO ISN'T DISAPPOINTED BY THE ENDING? (anime/manga)
But instead just happy for the whole story even existing...?
Don't get me wrong, I love Soul Eater, but I also respect the choices Okubo made. Everyone's usually so expectant about the ending for a series that it overshadows all the awesome the series has already delivered.

Flurrin In reply to raptorkil [2015-01-03 00:37:12 +0000 UTC]
I totally get that and what it feels like. I love the anime ending, so it's disappointing to see so many fans growling at it all the time as if it's trash.
But like, the thing is, the ending makes the story. It's nearly the most important thing. It's a time for readers to look back and think "Yes, my life has been improved by this tale. I have grown and learned with these characters. I have thought about things I never considered before. This was not a waste of time."
So when SE ended with all of the characters pretty much reverting to their characterization from the first chapter, including how the women have been treated, people were disappointed.
When it ended with a step back from all the morals it could have been leading up to to support the general shonen "Friends are awesome!! Hahaha! If you have no friends it really sucks to be you", people were disappointed.
And when readers realized nothing in the manga actually held any deeper meaning, it was just all a plot by some pervert who wanted to draw the moon turning into a boob and see how many more breasts he could sneak into a 12-year-old's comics magazine, we were angry. Especially since the characters WERE meaningful to us and DID hold so much untapped potential (that the anime was better at highlighting in my opinion). I was psyched for the ending, the chapter leading up to it was an emotional rollercoaster and that's the kind of content I looove in shonen. The first disappointment was the fakeout. It's not that I actually expected Spirit, Sid, and Marie to die on the moon, but the fact that all of them survived in such a cheap way (and Spirit's characterization reversal at that moment) was disappointing. Then, Spirit and Maka never got any kind of emotional closure. Maka doesn't owe him anything, true, but considering she'd been screaming for him just a page or two before, it didn't make sense that she was just like "oh, okay then." when he was unharmed. After that came the objectification and sexualization of ordinary female body parts and after that it just spiraled and spiraled into an insulting heap of female nudity and harassment that the series should have outgrown after the first three chapters.
So yeah. I get what it's liek to be the only one to like something. And it's even okay to like problematic things, as long as you acknowledge the issues (if not, I wouldn't even love this show at all, but it's one of my favorites!)
But I and a lot of people felt insulted and demeaned by the ending and we cannot respect the perversion behind Atsushi Ohkubo's decisions.

Hold up... how do I reply to an essay? >_<
I want to disagree about the ending needing to be the highlight of the series just because it's the common formula. The manga ending was odd, rushed, had some pervy moments (which didn't bother me personally), and left many things unresolved. It didn't deliver emotional satisfaction, maybe, instead it left us wanting it. As for morals, they could be found anywhere, and there's plenty in both endings if we dig deeper. "What we have not named as a symbol escapes our notice" - W.H.Auden
In my opinion, a timeline of a series has no start/end. We are just shown a certain segment which captures personalities of characters, and characters are the real heart of a story. They are the ones that bring us back and make us want more.

-Shrug- You don't have to.
There's a biiiig difference between an open ending (e.g.: Spirited Away, Fullmetal Alchemist [2003 anime]) and one that's just poorly handled. If you have an interpretation that was satisfying, would you like to post it? I'd love to read it, honestly.
The problem with the ending of Soul Eater, though, is that it made me--and I know a lot of people who agree--want less. Many fans argue the quality of writing dropped after the Baba Yaga Castle arc and think that should have been the ending point. What's the point of stretching something out if it's still not going to satisfy you in the end?
