Description After a mosaic of Christ Pantocrator

Pantocrator, (from the Greek), means  "Almighty".

The Pantokrator, largely an Eastern Orthodox or Eastern Catholic theological conception,
is less common by that name in Western (Roman) Catholicism and largely unknown to most Protestants.
In the West the equivalent image in art is known as "Christ in Majesty",
which developed a rather different iconography.

Painted in watercolours on drawing paper

Initial sketch drawn in charcoal,

then the outlines were repainted with a brush loaded with watercolours.

And then the whole painting was painted with watercolours.

I saw the mosaics on Internet.
I used several ref. pict.
The colours, angle of view etc... were different on each one.

The original mosaic has a golden background.
It is broken here and there;
some tessels (tiles) are missing.

The mosaic is an ancient and magnificent piece to the glory of God.

I agree, it's better without background. I know that icons usually have a golden leaf background, anyway, so unicolor or white is fine !

And yeah, when you use watercolor paper curls, that's sure. Try with more thick paper, like 200gr/m minimum or 250/300gr/m, that's watercolor paper. If you don't have, can't find or can't buy any, I can send you some... But it will not curl and is especially adapted for watercolors

About your drawing: I find it very nice. Christ has a very neutral look, and the outlines are like from a real paint. You should try to use more vivid colors eventually ? and work on drapés, (you know, folds of the clothes, that's what the French calls them) and maybe outline a bit more.

But it has its own luminosity (that's what icons have ! so congratz !) and I love seeing you drawing with traditional media too

Hope to see more work like this from you !

Thank you so much for your kind words and thoughtful comments.

I used a drawing paper (200gr/m²);

my first intention was to use only or mainly dry media, but then I got carried away...,

and used also watercolours.

and of course the paper buckled

But when I plan to paint in watercolours, I normally use a watercolour paper (300gr/m²)

What I like in all these Bizantine mosaics and icons of the Christ Pantocrator,

is the hieratic posture, the very elegant placing of the hands,

and the way he carries his head is haughty and seems detached from material contingencies.

It is very compelling.

TYA for all your nice words

N.B.  I was not sure whether or not I should paint the background.

Decided to leave it like that, at least for the moment....

The version without background looks fine.

thank you very much for your kind comment

Usually for portraits, I try to keep a fairly neutral background
so as not to distract from the main subject.

And furthermore here my paper curled ~~~~

So you are right, I will leave it like that!
