Description The Sacred Heart of Jesus
Watercolors and ink
August 2010

NOTE: I did kind of a crummy job piecing this together in Photoshop, it was a bit big for my scanner. So it's a bit crooked.

I had wanted to do this for a very long time, and I have to say I am very dissatisfied with the final result. This was a very frustrating picture, I went through a lot of spiritual warfare while painting this. At first I really felt guided by Our Lord, especially for the face and then I think I did a very bad job living up to it. But it's still not that bad, I like the border and the colors. Jesus has a farmer's tan. I inked his face with sepia ink but it wasn't waterproof and bled through and I don't like his eyes. He's too thin too.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus came to us especially through St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun from the 17th century. She received visions of Our Lord and private revelations in which Our Lord revealed to her His Most Sacred Heart. The visions gave to her the message for a special devotion to the Sacred Heart, and the passion with which Our Lord loves the world. According to St. Margaret, His Divine Heart was "more radiant than the sun and as transparent as crystal" and as a "furnace" of burning flames.

She said "I could plainly see His heart, pierced and bleeding, yet there were flames, too, coming from it and a crown of thorns around it. He told me to behold his heart which so loved mankind. Then He seemed to take my very heart from me and place it in His heart. In return He gave me back part of His flaming Heart."

Jesus asked her to have an image made of His Sacred Heart and promoted throughout the world with special promises to those souls who would display His image of His Sacred Heart. The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was officially recognized and approved by Pope Clement XIII in 1765, seventy-five years after St. Margerat Mary died.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart has been a solemnity in the Roman Catholic liturgical calendar since 1856, and is celebrated 19 days after the feast of Pentecost, and is thus always on a Friday.

Our Lord gave the folliwng promises to those who practice a devotion to the Sacred Heart:

1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life.
2. I will give peace in their families.
3. I will console them in all their troubles.
4. I will be their refuge in life and especially in death.
5. I will abundantly bless all their undertakings.
6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and infinite ocean of mercy.
7. Tepid souls shall become fervent.
8. Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection.
9. I will bless those places wherein the image of My Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated.
10. I will give to priests the power to touch the most hardened hearts.
11. Persons who propagate this devotion shall have their names eternally written in my Heart.
12. In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise you that my all powerful love will grant to all those who will receive Communion on the First Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance: they will not die in my displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments; and my Heart will be their secure refuge in that last hour.

Let us increase our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and further surrender ourselves to the King of Kings who has loved us with an unspeakable love and suffered all the torment of His Sacred Passion for our sakes. Let us unite ourselves with joy to the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, all burning with fervent love for each of us!

Prayers to the Sacred Heart

Act of Consecration to the Sacred Heart

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.

I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist Thee. Imprint Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee.
I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Goodness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of Thy devoted servants.

Amen.

Act of Consecration

I give myself and consecrate to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, my person and my life, my actions, pains and sufferings, so that I may be unwilling to make use of any part of my being other than to honor, love and glorify the Sacred Heart. This is my unchanging purpose, namely, to be all His, and to do all things for the love of Him, at the same time renouncing with all my heart whatever is displeasing to Him. I therefore take You, O Sacred heart, to be the only object of my love, the guardian of my life, my assurance of salvation, the remedy of my weakness and inconstancy, the atonement for all the faults of my life and my sure refuge at the hour of death.

Be then, O Heart of goodness, my justification before God the Father, and turn away from me the strokes of his righteous anger. O Heart of love, I put all my confidence in You, for I fear everything from my own wickedness and frailty, but I hope for all things from Your goodness and bounty.

Remove from me all that can displease You or resist Your holy will; let your pure love imprint Your image so deeply upon my heart, that I shall never be able to forget You or to be separated from You.

May I obtain from all Your loving kindness the grace of having my name written in Your Heart, for in You I desire to place all my happiness and glory, living and dying in bondage to You.

Concluding Prayer:
Father, we honor the heart of your Son broken by man's cruelty, yet symbol of love's triumph, pledge of all that man is called to be. Teach us to see Christ in the lives we touch, to offer him living worship by love filled service to our brothers and sisters.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer of Reparation

Most loving Jesus, when I consider your tender heart and see it full of mercy and tenderness toward sinners, my own heart is filled with joy and confidence that I shall be so kindly welcomed by You. Unfortunately, how many times have I sinned! But now, with Peter and with Magdalene, I weep for my sins and detest them because they offend You, infinite Goodness. Mercifully grant me pardon for them all; and let me die rather than offend You again; at least let me live only to love You in return. Amen.

Act of Reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

O Jesus, divine Savior, deign to cast a look of mercy upon Your children, who assemble in the same spirit of faith, reparation, and love, and come to deplore their own infidelities, and those of all poor sinners, their brethren.

May we touch Your divine Heart by the unanimous and solemn promises we are about to make and obtain mercy for ourselves, for the world, and for all who are so unhappy as not to love You. We all promise that for the future:

For the forgetfulness and ingratitude of men, *(We will console you O Lord)
For the way You are deserted in Your holy tabernacle,
For the crimes of sinners,
For the hatred of the impious,
For the blasphemies uttered against You,
For the sacrileges that profane Your Sacrament of Love,
For the outrages against Your divinity,
For the injuries of which You are the adorable Victim,
For the coldness of the greater part of your children,
For the contempt of your loving invitation,
For the infidelity of those who called themselves Your friends,
For the abuse of Your grace,
For our own unfaithfulness,
For the incomprehensible hardness of our hearts,
For our long delay in loving You,
For our tepidity in Your holy service,
For Your bitter sadness at the loss of souls,
For Your long waiting at the door of our hearts,
For the heartless scorn that grieves You,
For Your loving sighs,
For Your loving tears,
For Your loving imprisonment,
For Your loving death,

* We will console you, 0 Lord

Let us pray

0 Jesus! divine Savior, from whose Heart comes forth this bitter complaint, "I looked for one that would comfort me, and I found none," graciously accept the feeble consolation we offer You, and aid us so powerfully by your grace, that we may, for the time to come, shun more and more all that can displease You, and prove ourselves in everything, and everywhere, and forever Your most faithful and devoted servants. We ask it through Your Sacred Heart, O Lord, who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit one God, world without end. Amen.

Memorare to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Remember, O most kind Jesus, that none who have had recourse to Your Sacred Heart, implored its assistance, or called for mercy, have ever been abandoned. Filled, and animated by this same confidence, O divine Heart, Ruler of all hearts, I fly to You, and oppressed beneath the weight of my sins, I prostrate myself before You. Despise not Your unworthy child, but grant me, I pray, an entrance into Your Sacred Heart. Sustain me in all my combats and be with me now, and at all times, but especially in the hour of my death. 0 gracious Jesus! 0 amiable Jesus! 0 loving Jesus!

Amen.

Daily Prayer to the Sacred Heart

0 Sacred Heart of Jesus, mercifully accept the prayer which I now make to You for help in the moment of my death, when at its approach all my senses shall fail me.

When, therefore, 0 kind and merciful Jesus, my weary and downcast eyes can no longer look up to You, be mindful of the loving gaze which I now turn to You, and have mercy on me, a sinner.

When my parched lips can no longer kiss your most sacred wounds, remember that hour those kisses which I now imprint on You, and have mercy on me, a sinner.

When my cold hands can no longer embrace Your cross, forget not the affection with which I embrace it now, and have mercy upon me, a sinner. When my swollen and lifeless tongue can no longer speak, remember that I called upon You now, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, to you I commend my soul.

0 Sacred Heart of Jesus, filled with infinite love, broken by my ingratitude and pierced by my many sins and yet loving you still, accept this act of consecration that I make to You of all that I am and all that I have. Take every faculty of my soul and body, draw me day by day near and nearer to Your Sacred Heart, and there, as I can bear the lesson, teach me Your blessed way.

0 Sacred Heart of Jesus, Incarnate Son of God, who for our salvation did vouchsafe to be born in a stable, to pass Your life in poverty, trials, and misery, and to die amid the sufferings of the cross, I entreat You, in the hour of my death to say to Your divine Father, "Father forgive Him"; Say to my soul, "This day you to shall be with me in Paradise." My God, my God forsake me not in that hour. "I thirst"-truly, my God, my soul thirsts after You, who are the fountain of living waters. My life passes like a shadow; yet a little while and all will be consummated. Wherefore, my adorable Savior from this moment, and for all eternity, "into your hands I commend my spirit." Lord Jesus, receive my soul.

O Queen of the Holy Rosary and most kind and loving Mother of Perpetual Help, in memory of your Seven Sorrows, intercede for us with your divine Son and beg Him, in honor of His precious blood and sacred passion and death upon the cross, to forgive our sins and grant us the grace of a holy and happy death. Amen.

Prayer for the Forgiveness of Daily Neglects

Eternal Father, I offer the Sacred Heart of Jesus with all its love, all its sufferings of and all its merits:

First-To expiate all the sins I have committed this day and during all my life. (Glory Be)
Second-To purify the good I have done badly this day and during all my life. (Glory Be.)
Third-To supply for the good I ought to have done and I have neglected this day and during all my life. (Glory Be.)

Prayer of Adoration and Petition
Most Holy Heart of Jesus, fountain of every blessing, I love you. With a lively sorrow for my sins, I offer you this poor heart of mine. Make me humble, patient, and pure, and perfectly obedient to your Will. Good Jesus, grant that I may live in you and for you. Amen.

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

Your brother in the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
Aodhagain.

NO ONE gets Jesus' eyes right! This... is a fairly accurate depiction. You're in the minority with this, btw, but that's a compliment!!!! It means you did something (good) that most don't get right. (Because I just love it when Jesus' eyes look like they actually could BE Jesus' eyes!^^)

Are you suggesting I got Jesus' eyes right? No! No way. I totally beg to differ. Perhaps I'm the artist, and I'm prejudiced, but... They don't even look that anatomically correct. Though I do like to think of Jesus with piercing blue eyes.

In any case, thank you so very for this very nice comment. And the fave. I'm very happy to see that people like this one, I was never very fond of it.

God bless you! A blessed Advent to you, and all that - Come, Lord Jesus!

When I said that the eyes are 'right,' I did not mean anatomical proportion. To me, anatomical correctness in a picture matters only if there is nothing else of value that the picture can offer. You drew Jesus. I mean YOU DREW JESUS!!!!! He *is* value, he *is* importance, he is a whole bunch of everything that is so much more important than anatomical correctness.

I never look at what is actually drawn, where Jesus is concerned. I look at the substance of it. Does it "fit" to be Jesus? To my mind, I can never know Jesus 100%, so the anatomical incorrectness is a way to show that there is something elusive about Jesus, something I will never be 100% certain about (until the very end, if then).

So to me, Jesus' eyes would be... not completely revealed. First there would be a whole lot of a range of emotions (wisdom, kindness, sympathy, sadness, and yet still a hope and understanding and INFINITE patience, as well as just a bit of happiness). Plus other things that I have no chance of coming up with because I am only human. But the point I am making is that there would be EVERYTHING in Jesus' eyes, and I would see only the small parts of what I was able to see. The rest would be in glimpses and pieces along the way, and never more than a few at a time.

This is what I love here -- the incompleteness of what we are able to grasp that hints that there is a lot more to him that we don't understand THAT HE IS NOT HIDING FROM US. But that if we want to, we can understand.

Thank you for this art piece.

I've pretty much despaired of trying to draw Him anything like I actually imagine Him. He's too hard to pin down.

Yes, that's what I like about Byzantine icons. There's something mysterious and symbolic and elusive about them, but that's done in a very beautiful way. In the words of St. Paul "We see dimly now, as through a glass darkly."

Well, thank you for your appreciative comments. I'm very happy to have pleased someone so much with this piece.

Pax tecum!
