Description "The Angel of the Lord"
Watercolors, sepia ink, gold ink
September - November 2010

Not to happy with this one, it took a long time mostly because I was just lazy and only worked on it on and off. I don't like his face, and I'm mad I inked his face... But it's not too bad, I like the colors and the lighting. And the doves.

Gabriel appears in the Bible first in the Book of Daniel I believe, but he's most famous for his involvement in the beginning of Luke's Gospel, with John the Baptist and Jesus.

10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zechari'ah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechari'ah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; 15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Eli'jah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared." 18 And Zechari'ah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." 19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." Luke 1: 10-20

26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." 34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" 35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. 36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible." Luke 1:26-37

St. Gabriel is an archangel, along with St. Raphael and St. Michael.

Prayer to St. Gabriel
O Blessed Archangel Gabriel, we beseech thee, do thou intercede for us at the throne of divine Mercy in our present necessities, that as thou didst announce to Mary the mystery of the Incarnation, so through thy prayers and patronage in heaven we may obtain the benefits of the same, and sing the praise of God forever in the land of the living. Amen.

When you correct this, be careful. His feet and hands need to show strength of character. He is an angel. They worship the Lord God Almighty, and they do His bidding. Therefore, I believe the angel is strong, and you should pray, even fast a day, before you attempt the changes. This may be drastic advice, but you will have a better character, and drawing if you spend a little time praying through before you start, and then continuing to ask questions as you make the changes. I believe you are a wonderfully, talented artist. Who am I to critique, but I know that angels have to be strong to kick the devil out of the scene, and to do God's bidding. He makes us strong when we train. If an angel is active, He has been places, and landed many times. Angels often are not winged to us. They may appear as human forms only to speak the message we need to hear...the one of encouragement. I have no reason to talk..........I haven't seen angels, but I paint them also. When I do, I pray about the face, and the attributes. You will see the difference.

I really like this one! The colors are very pretty. And I love the teal cloak with the white and gold. It looks very kingly. Love the way the doves are scattering everywheer too. Colors, lighting, everything, great job!

Yep, this was my first time trying out new brushes and watercolors... And it was like a drastic change. I like the doves too.

Hmm, still not happy with his face. He looked like Russel Crowe before, should have kept it that way.

Only a rather thin Russel Crowe. And I wanted an Elvish looking angel.

I'll take that as a HUGE compliment. If there's anything that I want to inspire with my work, it's SILENCE. As Kierkegaard says, "If I could prescribe one remedy for the ills of modern society it would be silence" (or something to that effect).

Don't forget this one:
Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Also, I understand the correlation between the title and the picture. However, did you know that there is a stream of thought that teaches that the "Angel of the LORD" is a pre-Incarnate epiphany of Christ?

Yeah, but this is Gabriel, not St. Michael. I like St. Michael better though.

Hmm, you mean at the Annunciation and with Zechariah? Not sure I've heard that.

No- that is considered, in a way, to be symbolic of the Trinity.

I'm talking about the "angel of the LORD" appearances- the angel who talked to Moses in the Burning Bush, the angel who appeared to Joshua and Daniel, etc.
