I am first taken in by the expression. I like that his attention is focused away from the camera. Being placed on the straight lines of the steps works well against the all the curve elements of the model such as his hair, the eyebrow and ear. The use of black and white is great and the shades seem balanced well with the washed out area in the upper left which causes you eye to automatically focus on the face and stay there.
