Here's the Alliance's primary multirole fighter, the Wolverine, the bigger, badder counterpart to the Independent's interceptor force. Independent space assets tend to be maneuverable and agile, hence their smaller size and larger engine-to-mass ratio. The Alliance tends towards bigger ships, with a more "there is no kill like overkill" design principles. (Due to the economical differential between the two factions, the Alliance is able to afford higher-tier technologies and an overall larger force, while the Independent's space fleet tends towards guerilla and small-scale engagement scenarios)
