On our way back to the house from the wooded part of the yard, I stopped. Tilting my head towards the sky, I sighed and watched the snow fall lazily, a sudden weight lifted off of my chest at the particular sort of quiet you only get when it snows at night. The cold wasn't biting, but just sort of a comfort as the three inch blanket continued to crunch under the paws of Cleo. The world was silent and I looked back towards the house, a warm light shining in the kitchen, and saw Cleopatra looking at me with her ears twisted curiously as she watched me from over her shoulder. Her gold eyes shone adoringly in the pale light, seeming to ask me, Are you coming, mom? It's cold out here. I caught up to her, my gloved hand giving her an affectionate pat between the ears as we resumed our walk.
