mmm... I suspect that the biggest barrier, having put all the work into the thing, is the author's worry about it not being good enough. It is - good enough that is. As an experiment a university sent off the opening chapter of one of the man-booker prize books to something like 22 publishers, all but one rejected the book, and they suggested that made some major re-writes would be needed.
