Description An ant ascended the first time from his hole
and saw nothing but gray,
the earth and its mysteries obscured behind a fog.
"Surely my tunnels are all the world," said he,
and returned underground,
and thought no more of it.

And this is man a hundred fold!
This is man, and this is me.
I speak of The Big Picture as what I see
in a mirror or a microscope;
I know only myself and the merest fraction
of knowledge there is to be known.

The grand tapestry of plans within plans
was not revealed to me,
I see one circumstance and declare "life is misery,"
determined to miss the splendor of a thousand miles of forest
for the decay of a single tree.

What nearsighted foolishness, to say
"The world is this," or "the world is that"
as though the world were anything but a world,
a sphere of light and shade fully owned by neither.
Let "there are no words" be words enough,
and let man's fickle tongue give no more definitions.

A philosopher descended the depths of despair,
and knew an entire universe to be above that hole,
but declared instead "surely my tunnels are all the world!"
and brooded, and wept,
but thought no more of it.

I love both your writing and the message.
it reminds me of a childhood fable.Ā
And yeah, so many think negative people seem wiser when really, they're just more pessimistic.Ā

aww yes! I seldom read literary deviations, but this really unfolded itself.
this existence is so infinitely bigger than ourselves, and judging it by the tiny proportions we see and (think) we understand, is just fickle.
very well put! congrats!

For a moment I was convinced that I was reading a chapter of Nietzsche, he has the same style of writing, stocking example upon explanation upon example to slowly teach the reader well thought-through philosophy as if it were a children's story.
I've got one of his books, I'd mistake this for one of his chapters. It's good

I love it. It bugs me too when people try to squeeze things that are too broad into narrow spaces. I'm big on not clenching on to any particular belief and asking to be proved wrong, and this poem definitely touched that nerve for me. Attaboy

Thanks "This really hit home" is one of my second favorite things to here about the theme to one of my poems, right behind "I've never thought about that before, thanks for that"

The problem lies in that the term "is" doesn't work. When we say "something IS something" we are saying that it is this and nothing else which seems beyond our purview. It becomes much clearer if we replace, or think of the word "is" as meaning "can be though of as, or modeled after". In that way something such as "God is the universe" becomes "God can be thought of, or modeled after the universe" which makes a little more sense given what we can know with any absolute assurances. Anyway, rambling again

Very nice. I agree with your ranting; the world's not a great place all the time, but there's definitely notable beauty about it.

A sentiment so very true, so few people care to look beyond their back door. Eloquent as always Ross.

Isn't the world...
by necessity based on what one sees and experiences. Humans do have the advantage of being able to share there "visions" either through personal interactions or through recorded media (books, films, etc)
But in the end, each of our worlds are what is personally experienced.

Definitely. But people also need to understand that other people see things differently, and their own perspective is not necessarily the only one.
