I was almost really angry with this because I normally hate pelting and such, but you spoke such respect toward the Coyote, even called her as a she than an it, that I decided to find this extremely fascinating rather than appalling, ahah. I'm actually kinda jealous of the bone collecting, I have an obsession with skeletons, particularly canine. I could NEVER skin something, but wow, this really is truly amazing. Rest in peace, beautiful girl. ):

This coyote seems to be in wonderful condition based on the picture, in the lower one it looks as if the only injuries are a few broken ribs. You do not see that very often in road kill. Anyways, this is a very helpful refferance for the anatomy.

Magnificent use of something that would have just rotted on the side of the road. It takes a true scientific mind to take something sad/yucky and decide to look at it from a different point of view and study it.

Wow, I can't believe that coyote is roadkill! She's so beautiful and (judging only from this deviation) without any bruises!
Thanks for the reference. It was interesting.
LOL @ super-skinny tail.

Poor baby. I know coyotes can be problems but she was so beautiful I hope she didn't have any pups. Even though this is discusting to look at for me since I'm a die hard animal lover.

Poor baby..... This is really interesting though, I've never seen real muscle before! It's incredible how different and how much smaller she looks without her beautiful fur. I'm impressed that her body is in suck good condition for being roadkill. Do you know what her injuries were? (for all I know the other side of her could look awful)
Thanks for the reference, I'm glad her poor body was put to educational use. R.I.P girlie....

The other side of the body looked about the same as the one that shows in this photo. The only damage that I could find was a small rub on one side of her face and some bruising where her neck merged into her body. This makes me guess that her head is what got clipped by the car and (though light) that was enough of an impact to kill her.

Doing this seems like a huge pain. And it seems like you'd need a shitton of patience, ahaha.

Wow, thanks so much for posting this! Of course it's sad that the coyote died but it seems you were able to make so much use out of natural beauty that would otherwise have rotted. And it looks like you've done a pretty good job skinning it too, without damaging the muscles too badly. Do you have any other pictures, of different angles and whatnot? This is excellent art reference~

I like how u used it well! im sure that the coyote wouldve been happy for you to actually use his body, instead of just being a lump of fur on the side of the road! i probably wounldnt have skinned it, (but, its not like i shake my head at you) but i wouldve probably buried it, like i did with a Roadkill cat once! HEs Prbably proud to have been usefull Physicly!

She's truely gorgeous.
A little more plump than the coyotes I see in my area, so I think she died happy. Course that's my wishful thinking. x3;
I've actually never seen an image like this, (probably cause I don't look them up.... Ever) so immediately I was drawn to it/fav'd it.
I need to give you kudos for sounding respectful of her as well.
My uncle hunts and he's always talking about how, "it's just a dumb animal." And it gets my blood boiling.

I had my deviations on full-size, and then I hit the "contains mature content" button, and I just saw the coyote dead. I thought "This doesn't contain mature content! There isn't even any gore or-" then I scrolled down to comment....

Wow, excellent skinning job!! It took me a few years to get good at it from hunting, but it never looks clean enough. I'm impressed. Really! I own a coyote pelt of my own as well, but ours was sadly a male, shot because he was massacring the chickens at a friends house. u.u; Felt bad that we had to shoot it, but at least we had city law to do so since the farm was used for egg harvesting. -le shrug-

I adore animals and find it extremley cruel to kill for the sake of art , sport, fashion, or anything likewise.
however, if the animal died naturally or was killed for other purposes and would otherwise rott away, I see no problem with taxidermy . infact it kind of intrests me,I dont see the big deal with it if the animal was already dead XD
She was a very pretty animal here, you certainly have skill in this, Ive seen animals skinned before that have ended up quite messy but she looks perfectly preserved without fur in the bottom picture.
this is quite helpful anatomy wise too ^^

It doesn't look like a roadkill. It's not at all flattened or even looks at all scathed.

ghostwolfen In reply to RivenWren [2011-06-06 19:20:01 +0000 UTC]
Animals can get hit in the head with causing little damage on the outside but can then die quickly due to internal bleeding. If the car swiped the coyote on the site of the head the pressure alone could have been enough to kill it.

So how did the pelt turn out? Coyote's have a natural musk that's very hard to get rid of. Also, with deer I've noticed that road kill mounts tend to loose the fur in the area in which they were struck.
