Yeah, it is my fan-character from "9" ^^ Thank you, I'm so glad you like it. ^^
I'm not so good with solving problems xD; But, a lot of what I do when I'm trying to be original is I take something I really like--a style (like, say Steampunk), an art concept (maybe like cross hatching), a movie or character (lol,"9"), or anything else that you get inspired by (you like Tim Burton, right?), and then just tweak it. You said you are good with problem solving. Look at these things, and think how you might make it better, or change it if it were your own. Then, just keep going with it until you have something that is completely your own. ^^
...I don't know if that made any sense xD;;;....

You should definitely upload the doodles! That's where all the best stuff comes from xD
And, yeah, a lot of stuff feels like it's stealing, but if you keep tweaking and working it, it becomes your own.
A good way to develop characters is to fill out questionnaires, too. You can google 'character development sheet' and get all sorts of good stuff for that, and that helps you come up with new ones, too. (or, it does me anyway. xD) My favorite one is here [link] . It takes a lot of time, but it's DEFINITELY worth it ^^
There's also a bunch of creative-process web sites that are geared to helping you develop stories and characters, etc. ^^

Awwww .
I'm gonna say "I'm sorry" in advance, 'cause I am usually one of those people who look over others' shoulders to see what they're drawing/writing/whatever XD .
