Description
On August 3, 1991, off the coast of South Africa, it was a dramatic and scary circumstance, yet all 581 passengers on board were saved and survived. The ship sinks and is lost on August 4.
The cause was heavy waves and the ship taking on water as a result of incomplete waste disposal system repairs, which resulted in flooding. The ship's electricity went out, putting the passengers and personnel on board in danger. Fortunately, timely rescue attempts by helicopters and adjacent ships assisted in evacuating everyone.
The performers, such as Moss Hills and Alvon Collison, who kept the passengers calm and spirits up during the evacuation, were outstanding. Captain Yiannis Avranas's actions, on the other hand, were harshly condemned. He was accused of unprofessional behavior and carelessness after leaving the ship early. A Greek board of inquiry eventually convicted him and five other officers of criminal negligence.
No lawsuits; the Epirotiki Lines merged until defunct in 2005.
