Description
This was a commission piece, the image is painted on a 12" octagon-shaped deer hide drum.The colors and painting are much softer and more vibrant in reality.
Heron is a symbol of patience and wisdom. Heron people are generally good orators and leaders, powerful speakers and good listeners. Heron medicine teaches people that good things are worth waiting for, when to speak and when to listen.

for my coast salish tribe T'Sou-ke we have a song called the watcher and it is about heron. In the old days heron would hang around the village sites and warn about the incoming canoes. talk about an old school alarm system.
sadly not many hang around the villages anymore.

Really beautiful. What did you paint it with? I was wondering if it was a drum for decoration or for use, and how it would wear.

I used liquid acrylic paints, then use an acrylic fixative (multiple layers) to preserve the image from scratching and wear. Even with regular use, it seems to work well to protect the image itself

Herons are such amazing birds - you have definitely captured one in this drum. 
I can't help but laugh, though. It reminds me of how they look in flight - with a huge grin on their face and an appearance not unlike that of cumbersome pterodons. And then when they try to land in a tree they lose all of their grace.
