Keep in mind they probably came from an abusive household. For all we know they were never even taught the difference to begin with. Or that's one of my theories anyway. The real reason is more because they're the protagonist of a video game and so their gender is ambigious cause self-insertion. But you know it's fun to come up with other theories.
