Description
I recently discovered mokume gani (a damascus type of creation, using in this case copper and nickel). I love the result and learned a LOT. My coal burning forge is the worst possible way of making it, the nickel absorbs impurities (like carbon from coal) and won't form a bond. I tried 3 billets of metal from 16 to 20 layers of each metal and this was the biggest to survive of about 8 layers of each. I also ended up with a bunch of unwelded scraps and one actually awesome failure of a group that welded and then started to melt into the coal (gonna have to show that one after I clean it up a bit) forming a clinker welded to the edge of a copper plate standing it on its side like a display stand.
I also learned something interesting happens when you clean it with ferric chloride quickly, the copper turns a beautiful red that settles to an odd orange/pink hue after cleaning.
I didn't polish it beautifully before cleaning because I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with it and might end up cutting it up which would make the hours of work polishing it kind of a waste.
