ahh this is adorable! I really love the pastel color theme you've choosen. Also - BANANA FISH! This artwork is SO unexpected with the style and theme this anime is going for haha, it's a nice change seeing them in a happy world, but that might be the case of why I didn't recognize them, until i've read the tags. As I said - I love the pastel theme, but the whole piece looks quite desaturated, making the shadows a bit darker and maybe changing the jeans and belt color to match the hue of eiji's hair would help. The biggest flaw I can point out is eiji's hands, I understand how hard hands can be, but try to take the challenge! I don't see people hugging each other with fists so this pose is quite unnatural. The anatomy and proportions look good, except maybe for eiji's torso as it feels too long. And lastly the clothing - you need to focus on folds more, though it's pretty good so far. There should be folds on eiji's arm where it bends, lack of folds on his shirt (unless it's supposed to be oversized - then more folds near the hips).

What I like about this illustration is the cute pose and the happy expressions of the characters! It's such a cute illustration and I really like how the pastel colors support the cuteness~
The base colors have a nice balance, but in my opinion the whole illustration looks too soft. The shading in this piece is pretty minimalistic and seems to act as an outline rather than a shadow. When drawing without lineart it's important to either choose colors that separate each other due to different hue/saturation/brightness (this will have a more abstract and flat effect) or to add a lot of contrast to help distuingishing the different shapes from each other as well as adding some three dimensionality. In your piece there is not a lot of contrast and because of this, it's hard to distinguish some of the shapes for example Eiji's arm from Ash's neck. Although there is a slight difference in their skin tone, the two colors are still very close to each other. I suggest adding some darker shadows, for example a cast shadow on Ash's neck, and trying out different layer modes for shading, for example the multiply mode.
The shading in this piece is a bit inconsistent. It seems like the light is coming from the left (judging from Ash's cast shadow onto Eiji), and while Ash's body is shaded according to the light source, Eiji's body is missing shadows other than the cast shadows. According to the light source there should also be some shadows on the right side of Eijis shirt and trousers. I also think there should be some shading on the clothes, hair and faces as well. Especially the hair and clothes are a good opportunity to add some texture to your illustration and make it look more detailed and polished. Of course you don't have to draw in every single strand of hair or every fold in the clothes if you want to keep your style a bit simpler, but even small things such as adding highlights can help to make an illustration stand out more.
I'm sure this illustration would look even better with consistent, darker shading and some highlights!
The background is simple but I really like the color ^^ Maybe you could add a gradient or a pattern to make it more interesting~
