There seems to be something magic about Great Bend, KS around Christmas time. Think this is the third year in a row in which we've had some thick hoar frost during our stay at my grandma's. Hoar frost is basically freezing fog. Though I'm not sure why some crystals are so much larger and isolated from the rest of the frost, it sure is beautiful when you look closely.

I came to your site looking for the December calendar photo to fave. The birds in the snow was phenomenal. I can't find that image, but some of your other ones are great.

Very nice! If your wondering why some are bigger and more isolated that others... it's all about nucleation and growth. Liquid water (in this case fog) will need a small amount of energy to freeze initially. After that if the temperature is just right, it's more energy efficient for more water to freeze onto that initial nucleus instead of creating a new one. That happens if the temp is just barely under freezing. if nothing nucleates around it, chances are the glas was pretty clean. Dirt etc can serve as nucleation sites due to the structured surface. smooth glass doesn't provide much of a nucleation site, so once one small part freezes, the other water in the area begins to grow onto it as a single crystal...
Anyhow, hope that wasn't too boring of an explanation. I learned the same principles to study how metals solidify when cast into a mold!

Nucleation, that's the word I was looking for! I was going to describe their growth "generating outward from a single point" but the word was just on the tip of my tongue Thanks for the explanation!

np, such a great picture though! I'm kinda sad we don't get frost where I live now...

Can't be denied it's beautiful. Here, in Poland, it is not difficult to observe and catch on photos. The reverse macro technique you've used to capture this is totally awesome, I'd never thought of anything like that! Unfortunately it is a little bit harder with no camera...

FramedByNature In reply to ComicScribe [2011-07-04 05:53:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'd imagine the reverse macro technique is a bit trickier without the camera
