Description This is the rejected preliminary sketch for the cover art of "Magic Item Compendium" from Wizards of the Coast. I used a photo from one of those "action pose for illustrators" type books; I don't recall what the exact book title was, sorry. The model was a bald guy, wearing dark pants and no shirt if anyone recognizes the book I am talking about. Anyway this was rejected because another artist had used the EXACT SAME POSE for another recent book cover. What are the odds?

Yeah, they had a pretty specific list of things they wanted to see in the character.

It's incredible the way to keep such strenght with the colors you used, along with the dinamism you represent with the character. Great job!!!

I own this book... and i liked the knight on the cover. Now i see this, and think... "man, this would've been an amazing cover, instead of the other dude."

Thing is i like this one more than the actual one.

Ah, well, I can't do that kind of math. I'll just enjoy the art here. The glasses give this guy so very much more character than he would have had without them.

hehe! thanks keight! yeah you don't see many sword and sorcery types wearing glasses. but that was part of the character description as he was given to me, I can't take credit for it.

This may be the first optically challenged spell slinger I've seen in about 30 years of RPGing.

thanks man - yeah I have found that these "preliminary sketches" actually have to be pretty well developed in order to prevent a lot of changes and editing down the road.

Gotta love those odds. I think its one of those 'Murphy's Law' things, the odds are always against you! Look on the bright side, it wasn't rejected because you were late because you were hit by a meteorite... At least people believe your reason!

Ironically, right now I'm writing an email to my uni teachers, telling them I can't do a speech tomorow because my face is completely mutilated froma rockclimbing fall... How's that for coincidence?!

What are the odds, indeed?
Neat-o cover; sorry it didn't make it.
That would have been most excellent.

that looks fantastic.. I guess its just a matter of taking your own reference shots cause Im sure it would have looked great with your own. Ive also heard of people taking screencaps from wrestling matches which seems pretty hard to duplicate

wow.... I love the roughtness of some parts of the drawing. The blade although very simple is really realistic and looks very nice..
The movement in the pic is awsomely drawn.
I really love this one..

I suppose thats the risk with using those kinda books. But models are expensive - I sometimes use my digital camera and work out poses (unfortunately I have a less than heroic physique so that only helps a little). All the same, I love it, especially the energetic brush strokes and the framing.

francis001 In reply to Hungrysparrow [2007-09-12 19:45:03 +0000 UTC]
