btw.. I've been very curious, what exactly is the difference between using Photoshop and using Corel Painter? I have PS CS2, and I know where to get a good deal on painter, but what exactly is the benefit of both / each?

actally, the brushes work a bit different between Painter and photoshop.. it feels like (to me anyway) that photoshops strengths are in its edit tools and customizations of brushes, and painters are in its brushes.. painter's feeling less intuitive to me, but is smoother with its brushes and blending tools. Photoshop's more "hard" in comparison, but with enough tweaking (which again, is more intuitive) it probably can create similar results..
i think that with both programs, its all a matter of how much you are willing to experiment!

Nice work! I lie the pose and repeated swirlie motif that runs through it. It gives off this quiet yet extraordinarily badass vibe to it, and it's doubly striking given the muted colour palatte.
