So, , HERE'S MY OWN VERSION/INTERPRETATION Drawing of your Star Fox fan character: the lovely leader of the Crimson Fox squadron, Nora Leslie!!
What do you think of the sword? I drew lots of inspiration from the Phantasy Star Online games in the design!

YES!! Phantasy Star is a great inspiration.
In my canon of my Star Fox comic, there's a branch of the Cornerian Military that specializes in the use of melee weapons like swords (like this one), axes and polearms, despite bieng overshadowed by the use of long range laser weapons, it still exists.

The Cornerian Branch that utilizes melee weapons must have advanced training and gear to compensate the lack of range. That's pretty boss!
You've seen an image of Nora posed with her Fusion Cutter. She does have some sort of CQC training taught by her grandfather to fend for herself in a crime ridden colony. She can wield all sorts of one handed blades pretty well and wouldn't mind defeating enemies using what you've drawn for her.
