Description something a little different... the title is a reference to ancient mariner's maps which were often marked thusly in areas known for high levels of ship disappearances, the loss attributed to monsters.

WRZESZCZ [2007-09-29 18:34:47 +0000 UTC]

Now the water looks better, I think It corresponds to the sky - good job!
One thing about the monster - it looks dry. Why? I can't see any reflections of the water on it's body. If You could make it's skin more shiny.. [read: add reflections to the monster's material]

fraterchaos In reply to WRZESZCZ [2007-09-29 19:53:57 +0000 UTC]

yes, I thought of trying to make the monster seem wet, but I didn't think of making it more shiny, I was thinking more along the lines of adding droplets of water falling from it... which would have been an extremely tedious job.

the water looks ok, but I didn't use any mountains to make the appearance of waves, its just a fairly standard flat bryce water material (I did adjust some of the reflection and color qualities of it)

thanks for the comment and the advice, I will keep that idea in mind next time

Oh my....
the colors of the sky/water makes it feel very early morning.
The only thing I find a little less than perfect is that bit of fire (I think) it's very yellow.
Other than that, this is wonderful. You did a great job with this.

fraterchaos In reply to IdrilAsphodel [2007-09-29 18:03:14 +0000 UTC]

thanks, and yes, it was supposed to be fire... a signal fire I guess for the fellow who survived the wreck...

bryce doesn't have much selection for fire materials, and that one didn't look too relaistic once I put it in, its a bit too far from the camera to see the red parts...

I love the water!! and that monster looks like a very promising destroyer.. although.. I'm not sure what is that yellow spot behind the serpent's neck, it seems a bit off the picture. but great job nontheless!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fraterchaos In reply to the-panpiper [2007-09-29 17:59:54 +0000 UTC]

thanks, and for the fav too

the yellow spot is supposed to be a signal fire or perhaps cooking fire for the tiny figure of a man who evidently survived the shipwreck... but the Bryce flame material didn't really look very realistic especially so far away from the camera.

the-panpiper In reply to fraterchaos [2007-09-30 06:06:02 +0000 UTC]

I see... I thought that was supposed to be a fire of some sort, but I was not sure so I asked

Water looks better, still a BIIIIIT too reflective. take it down one or two notches... or whatever it is you do. But getting better!

fraterchaos In reply to AceMaxim [2007-09-29 17:56:20 +0000 UTC]

well, that water is just the standard bryce preset of (I think its called) "slight foam" or something, I didn't put any mountain-waves in it, so the surface is really just flat...

I did turn down the reflection a little, but I didn't want to go much more because I liked the reflection of the sea serpent, and it would also have made everything darker...

AceMaxim In reply to fraterchaos [2007-09-29 22:18:44 +0000 UTC]

ah. it looks good, don't get me wrong, i guess i'm just used to water being that mirror-coated

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fraterchaos In reply to AceMaxim [2007-09-29 22:38:05 +0000 UTC]

no problem, I thought it might be a little too reflective myself.

Nah....
That water is not too reflective,
It's just very clean.
I just had me a cup.
