Far as I understood it, the dojin model in Japan exists because of differences in copyright law there. Do you really figure that with the Internet and fan-backings like KS we could have anything similar in the States? Don't you reckon that if it gains any significant traction it'll get slapped with a C&D?
That being said, I hope it does work out well. You're already a significant portion of the way into your goal! Good luck!

Not a concern - the differences in copyright laws don't apply to this case because it's not using actual characters CREATED BY Square Enix. It's using a setting, true, but arguing that the setting on it's own constitutes prosecutable infringement is, to say the least, difficult.
The content of Lvl Up classifies more as homage or "shout out" than blatant copying as would be required for infringement.
In short: If it gets slapped with a C&D, Square has overstepped their authority in protecting their copyright.

I was thinking in terms of a larger "dojin culture" rising in the West, fueled by the independent publishing platforms of webcomics and Kickstarter-style group backing. I figure Fred's got the concerns over his own works well in hand.

I have lots of fond memories of FFXI.Β LVLUP brought all of them back, and even though I can't bring myself to go back to Vana'diel, there's a lot of good that I look back upon, thanks to this comic.Β I'm in.

You should think about doing an AMA on Reddit to help promote your kickstarter. Your "You are a Pirate!" animation was a huge hit over there and got to the front page.

AMA stands for Ask Me Anything. A lot of celebrities use it to promote projects they're working on like charities or films.

Basically you create a post with a title describing yourself; "I am a comic book artist and animator of GoldDiggers and You Are a Pirate! Fred Perry, Ask me anything." Or something like that. Then in the text field you expand a bit more on yourself, take a photo of yourself that usually says "Hi Reddit" and and then details on what project you are working on/promoting.Β
Then the community will begin to post questions, and you reply to them. There will be fans asking questions about process or people just askingΒ irrelevant questions about fighting a 1 duck size horse or a 100 horse sized ducks. But in all its all in good fun and will expose your work to more people.
