Description Everything old is new again! I once mentioned the possibility of doing this, and finally got that particular bee out of my bonnet: a modern pic of the New Avengers concept that a few friends and I developed in early 1987 and pitched to Mark Gruenwald at the first WonderCon. This was inspired by the announcement that Steve Rogers would be resigning as Captain America; we imagined him taking on the new identity of The Patriot and forming a new team of Avengers. I suppose, in our youthful enthusiasm, we didn't reckon on how far ahead the writers and artists at Marvel would actually have been planning (the "Cap resigns" storyline played out in Captain America #332-350).

For the sake of "historical accuracy", I've tried not to stray too far from the designs of our original concept sketches (I've spared you the sight of Doc Samson with a green mustache, though).

The roster was:

Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter)
Spectrum (originally Doctor Spectrum from Squadron Supreme)
Ant-Man (Scott Lang. Since we intended for him to employ both the shrinking and enlarging powers, we wanted to give him a new code name, but the best we could come up with was Gi-Ant. Get it? Yeah, I know. Sorry.)
The Patriot (Steve Rogers)
Doc Samson
Nighthawk (Rick Jones)
Jocasta
Toro (a new version of the Golden Age Human Torch's sidekick)

UPDATE: Made a few tweaks to the colors, linework, and logo.

Is Steve wearing a wig? Also, do not be ashamed of Gi-Ant.

Yes, a silver wig with a ponytail -- he was rockin' the Colonial style!

A couple of other character bits I remember: Nighthawk's power of flight was courtesy of a harness which was based on the technology of the anti-gravity discs used by the Fantastic Four villain the Wizard; Toro was a high school student and a wrestler, so he wore a wrestling uniform as his costume.

Not always a fan of Rick taking on a costumed identity of his own. Still, I'd say you've got a good grasp on that 80’s comics mojo here.

Man, that wigged look would have been wild. Nowadays you'd have to give a sort of open collar and flourishes to evoke the 18th-Century uniform meets 20th Century superhero, but they didn't think about tha sort of thing in '87.
