This scene reminds me of one in "Moominsummer Madness". A female fillyjonk was sitting at table. She was definitely NOT human. She also wore a bell in her hat. It and many other touches were to make it a festive occasion for her relatives whom she expected to arrive. Hours later, they hadn't and she was crying. A friend finally came by and asked why the grief. The snork maiden suggested that she not bother with her relatives anymore if they did this every year. "Why not invite REAL friends ?".

This led to some magic, it being midsummer eve. It all led to a hattifattener attack on a tyrannical hemulen park-keeper, a trip to see a play being performed in the middle of a creek, and so on.
