Description
I had an idea to draw Elric of Melnibone, one of the protagonists in Moorcock's Eternal Champion series, to see how he would look in my style.
I own a volume of old Marvel Elric comics, which isn't very good (it's from that highly infantile, pornographic era of comic media in the early to middle 90's), but which is still Moorcock's stories, writing, and dialogue, and thereby still very interesting. If you take away all of the Grimdark Sword and Sorcery posturing, Moorcock's Elric stories are about a well-intentioned hippy who's substance abuse problems burn through all of his interpersonal relationships. "Grimdark" media, such as Berserk or Watchmen, is at it's best when the suffering of it's plots is conveyed in a humane, sympathetic way, and when something other than constant glum brooding is allowed to exist, causing the bleakness of the work to have anything to contrast with and creating investment in the world and people. Some level of humanity will be more believable than none, and the Elric cycle is a great example of that in action, being still very romantic for a work of Dark Fantasy similarly to the much later Ice and Fire series.
Also I'd had an idea for a later scene in my webcomic, of my webcomic protagonist becoming jittery-exited upon spotting Elric in public. Elric would, of course, be very blinking, indifferent, and confused to this. I'll see where that idea goes (maybe nowhere).
