Description 24" x 24" canvas
Gerneral's charcoal pencils and sticks
Blending stick and tissues
Mercur eraser
General's Conte Crayon

This is a drawing I created for my mother's 50th Birthday. For about a year now she has been telling me about how cool it would be to have a drawing of her two horses touching faces in the shape of a heart. My parents have two Tennessee Walkers, a palamino named Holiday and a black and white paint named Spirit. After a while I found a picture with two horses posed the way she described. I drew it on a 24" x 24" canvas and just changed the horses' appearances to match my parents horses and this is the outcome.

I used charcoal for the horses and conte crayon for the red background. It was quite experimental. I have only used charcoal a handful of times before and I had no idea how it would come out on a canvas. Lets just say with a canvas that large you're going to go through a lot of charcoal. All of mine is down to the nub. The charcoal pencils held up better but I only used them for the finer details as opposed to filling a large area with shadow.

This piece has a lot of meaning to me. To make a long story short, I have been living no less than 550 miles away from my home town for the last 5 years. It has been quite the test on my parents and mine's relationship. Especially when you throw my three year old son in the mix that they rarely get to see. Living that far away makes it difficult to make frequent visits. So all in all, I decided to surprise my mom with this piece at her 50th birthday party that I made sure I was able to come to. She was so surprised and got mad at me because I made her cry in front of everyone that was there. It represents the loving and caring that is shared between mother and daughter and it gave me the idea for the title "Together" because no matter how far apart we are we are still together. I know, it's mushy, but it's true.

I thought I was just going to write a brief background of this drawing but I guess there was a lot more to share about it. If you read this far, thank you, and I hope you enjoy this as much as my mother did.
