I must say this joke is not well thought out. Not only they would be dooming themlelves and Equestria, Twilight would e able to beat them up without any problem considering how incompetent guards are.
I think this joke would work better if Twilight ordered them to search for celestia like she did in the show. But they took vacation instead saying "Twilight will handle it in the end as she always do"
It would actually make sense considerig that royal guards did absolutly nothing in that episode, not even escorting Twilight or evacuating Ponyville.

Though perhaps there are different degrees of horn disabling, such as being unable to perform spells that require more than a certain power output. IRL, stadiums and cruise ships use less security than airplanes (which would also explain Twilightβs ability to cast magic in that episode).

Considering Shining Armor can do shield spells that even alicorn princesses can't do we really don't know what guards are capable off. We know about the spell disabling thing from Equestria games episode that works on alicorn as well. Also show doesn't allow male characters to do much so we can't assume they are useless. What will be the reason to have guards that can do nothing

When challengings invaded, main 6 beat 100 changelings while being unarmed and outnumbered, while army of guards were defeated off screen. Whenever there is a crisis, guards fail or do nothing. Guards failed to even be there when Sunset Shimmer ran away with Twilight's tiara. They were even distracted from their post by a cake.Β
Shining Armor Β can only create giant barriers because he comes from Twilight's family, and Cadence did exacly the same in Crystal Empire.
While I don't want guardsand the Wonderbolts to be incompetent, the idea they would capture Twilight is just stupid. Just because she became an alicorn doesn;t mean she need to become useless princess, a lady in distress.
