Description A fond farewell, whether said to a cherished loved one, old habit, place or perhaps your former self requires insurmountable courage. In many ways, The Goodbye represents a step in my own maturity.

In memory of Vincent Dang (1990-2010) and to all his family and friends who truly miss him.

This artwork was inspired by a very common theme in children`s literature and films: The child who befriends and tames an otherwordly creature. A particular painting by Russian artist Ivan Solyaev depicts a little boy and a large, nebulous creature at his back, presumably his pet. The docile expression in his eyes and the pair`s interaction compelled me to paint something similar.

"You become responsible forever for what you've tamed"
~Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince, 1943

love it of course! You should try a version were the bear is fading into transparency to look more whimsical and ghostly.

Thanks Yessie! I'll definitely attempt another version. If I increased the transparency of the bear, he would begin to resemble the evanescent Aurora Borealis emanating from his back. That would certainly add to the whimsicality of the character.

I would also say you should push the colour in the face of the child, remember in the cold cheeks and noses and ears turn rosy

I might emphasize the ear and cheek a bit more. The nose looked like a red button when I first tried

Subtle It would appear as though he were both cold and letting go a few precious tears.

But you were right! Your suggestion brought a sudden eureka moment. I returned to the boy's visage and refined it, going so far as to add freckles and ruddy cheeks.
