Description I've always loved the wonderful artwork from The Doctor Who and the Daleks Omnibus (1976)

So, here is an 'updated' version, with the Daleks replaced with the New Series variants.

I've tried to find out who the original artist is, but to no avail. If anyone does know, could you please let me know?

Yes it seems you ain't gonna get any closer than The General Illustration Company as far as illustrator or artist for this one. I guess it is some contract clause in-house thing?!? It is quite similar also to the earliest comic book artwork and has the same retro buzz about it. I nearly built one of the TV21 magazine Daleks way back around 2005/6 - but opted for a full sized Genesis build instead, which turned out really well. It went up on the Bay of E not long ago and was snapped up by a bit of a pop star, who actually came to collect itΒ in person,Β and we had a great few hours fun dismantling the Dalek and cramming it into his car, then playing about with my own guitars. Terrific guy indeed. He said he is going to organise to have the Dalek up on stage with him this year?!?
Great job you did here, FC - it really conveys the Dalek feel and vibe. Takes me right back to those heady days... Β Β Β

Thank you. I really enjoyed painting this, its a lot looser than I usually work. I think I learned a lot doing the copy.

did you use watercolor and ink for this?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

fresian-cat In reply to emurox [2013-06-08 13:39:53 +0000 UTC]

No although I guess I should have - I didn't have any inks. I used a Sharpie pen for the linework, and very diluted acrylics for the colous

Thank you. I really love that book, and its illos. I have a real fondness for the Who stuff of my childhood - it was all drawn/painted, none of this all-photo sameness we have now

Thank you. I'm surprised by this, cos I found the New Paradigm actually look pretty good here. I reckon it must be a cartoony style to them? Which is why they never worked on screen - Daleks are tanks, not cartoons

Herbarianband In reply to fresian-cat [2013-03-08 20:22:19 +0000 UTC]

They were just too big and garish I reckon, the subdued colours they used in Asylum worked much better.

fresian-cat In reply to Herbarianband [2013-03-08 22:11:32 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I saw those at Cardiff a couple of weeks before they hit the screen, and the blue and red looked good, but the white one (hadnt been repainted) looked pretty naff. Too plastic. The metallic red and blue gives them more weight and solidity somehow. We also saw them as part of the show/tour in quite low lighting which really helped.

I'm glad the production team seem to have arrived at the conclusion that they're scarier when they're smaller!

Fantastic work.
The colours are spot on and it just makes them seem classic and brilliant.
Also seeing them like this makes the new-new Daleks' shape make more sense.
