This is very effective.

Have you ever read the book?

Nope. It's quite a bit different from the Disney film from what I know... and a LOT more depressing.

Not even Mufasa’s death in The Lion King compares to this. Β The Fox and the Hound is the ULTIMATE Disney sadness.Β

That too was very emotional. I can't really think of any other sad moments in Disney films that compares to the two.Β

I wish animated films today had scenes as emotional and tear jerking as this.

Zootopia had at least one but TFATH is the biggest tear jerker of them all for me.

I forgot about Zootopia.

For a modern animated film, it was pretty clever.

GoodCaptainClack [2019-02-09 02:25:48 +0000 UTC]

One of my favorite Disney movies and...well...probably one of the first five movies I can ever remember seeing (Brave Little Toaster would be the one I remember seeing first)...but it's not one I often go back to and revisit. Not because I've grown off the movie or anything but because it just puts me in a sad and sour mood nearly every time I watch it. Probably because it's just too life-like in places. Real friendships have sadly been destroyed in real life in very similar ways to Tod and Copper's, all because they come from different walks of life where two people from those groups are not expected to be friends. It hits a little too close to home. Particularly the ending where Tod and Vixey look down over the hill at Copper's house and we hear the echoes of the two of them when they were children saying they would always be friends forever...God, that always makes me want to start shedding manly tears right on the spot. It just hits me that hard. I suppose you could say it's a happy ending because they both have good lives awaiting them still, but if anything I'd say it's far more bittersweet because most likely they will never interact with one another ever again and can only be friends in spirit. That's not truly a happy ending, is it?

And this is one of the saddest parts as well. Tod was practically the widow's child ever since she took him in, imagine being forced to basically throw your kid to the wolves because somebody wants to inflict serious harm upon them or outright kill them. And your kid not fully understanding why. It's not a totally soul-crushing movie all the way through (I always adored Tod and Vixey's warming up to each other, for one, I thought that was cute), but...Gah, this movie is seriously heavy in parts and hits way too close to home. Which is like I said, why I don't really enjoy watching it all that often. Because it leaves me feeling sad and a little empty inside by the end of it, and I don't like going out of the way to make myself feel sad, y'know?

But it's still a lovely piece Frey, even if this movie doesn't exactly give me the happiest memories or feelings

FreyFox In reply to GoodCaptainClack [2019-02-09 09:10:16 +0000 UTC]

I ended up feeling rather melancholy after I last watched it, for the first time in a couple of years or so. That's not good for my health, but Tod is probably the reason I ever grew to love foxes in the first place. He's my favourite fox, and it always breaks my heart to see him just left behind in the woods. The widow's cub is all grown up now, but is essentially domesticated and out of his comfort zone. The final shot is beautiful as well.

In a book Disney released soon after called "A Narrow Escape" Tod and Vixey have two cubs and teach them survival skills. They also briefly meet the Widow and Copper again.

Like I tweeted to you... "I think you did this scene more justice than the actual movie! Especially with the grey colors and all. I recall I had to fast forward through this part due in part of how emotionally powerful this movie can be. You just made it better!"

At least technically the movie does have a happy ending.
