Description Part 0 - The Boring Introduction

Hello everybody !

Friedric P here. Today I'm starting a series of articles about one of my past, erm, "creative experience". I hope that a few lads and gals will find this interesting or sometimes useful, and not too boring. Well, that's just a hope . As I do not have the time to currently work on my personnal website, I will write all that stuff here instead, before everything is forgotten... And sorry for the spelling mistakes that I will surely do, english is not my native langage ^_^.

Also before starting, I would like to thank the good old KRMZ, the project manager - without him, all that would have not been possible.

So, here we go.

From february 2005 to january 2008, I did have the unique opportunity to spend a lot of time on a modification for Relic Entertainement real time strategy game Dawn of War (for those who don't know, it is a video game based on Games Workshop Warhammer 40000 Universe). A very interesting yet exhausting project, the Witch Hunters mod was an incredible experience which gave me the chance to extense my skills in many graphical areas - most notably character animations, realtime FXs, mapping coordinates, low resolution textures, and realtime optimisation.

During this time I was able to create 18 new units with models, unwraps, textures, skinning, animations, FXs, and in-game integration. I did the same with 11 buildings. I was involved in the developpement of 8 others models, doing bits of integration or complete animations for those ones. And during my "free" time, I also made 2 game levels (3 more were left incomplete ).

Doing this stuff completely alone was far from being easy - I now clearly understand why video game studios have large staff those days. Really, it's hard to keep motivation on such a long project, especially when (I love stupid challenges) you are trying to beat the original graphical quality of the game, alone in a cave while there are 50 guys on the other side. But despite being nearly dead in the end, this project was incredible for learning, and gave me some nice reliefs - the most interesting being a job offer, and a good laugh when my models were used (by mistake) by Games Workshop for promoting an official Dawn of War extension.

Alas, despite a state of completion close to 99%, the mod was left uncomplete for many reasons that I will explain another day.

I am still quite happy with the experience, but it's clear that I won't do that anymore. So before everything disappear in the wind, I will take a little time to show some work that was never published, explain how and why I made the Witch Hunters that way, post some textures and explain a little my way of working. Maybe it will give some interesting ideas to fans of warhammer 40k, or to aspiring old-gen 3d realtime creators

Ah, and of course :

If you search the relic forums or DOW mods site you can find it. Truly an amazing effort, and well worth playing.

The Sister of Battle (and Dark Eldar) from Soul Storm came off to me as just a bunch of crazies (more than everybody else) are the Sisters of battle crazy kill-everything-with-fire zealots, or they just like the space marines that are mostly girls in therms of faith and sanity?

Sekele In reply to Druds [2013-02-01 22:04:30 +0000 UTC]

for the settings standards, the sisters are relatively sane
outside of combat, they do also run hospitals around the Imperium

their level of fanaticism largely depends on who happens to be leading them at the moment

Damn you are killing me buddy. When I saw the Sisters in Soulstorm, which in my opinion are even below the standards of the original DOW, I nearly threw up. Not that I expected the quality of your mod, it would not fit in with the rest of the game but they did not even reached the standard of the game itself. The whole sisters more looked like they were done in a hurry over the weekend.

You should not talk about "trying" to beat 50 overpaid "whatevertheyare" instead you should talk about "trying" to have mercy with them.

Oh Boy! If that really were what it takes to publish the finished mod, you would have a Harem by now

Absolutely amazing mod, I totally love it. Models and textures are superb, they are far more better than Soulstorm's, or Firestorm over Kronus mod.
But I'm really sad that mod is uncomplete. Is there is no way you can upload version with Assassins and Ordo Malleus' units somewhere?

Sorry for the double post, forgot to ask: FriedP, did you ever get to use this in any way? At least as examples of your work for a job or something like that? I know you spent about 3 years on this. Even though we never got to play it, I'd hate to hear that all that work never got used in some way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Friedric-P In reply to ab2531 [2009-05-13 22:18:37 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ab2531 In reply to Friedric-P [2009-05-14 08:38:18 +0000 UTC]

Friedric-P In reply to ab2531 [2009-05-19 20:06:32 +0000 UTC]

I was lucky to play the beta of this mod.

Im not good at real time strategy game so I spent most "play time" in the modelviewer.

Anyway I suggest that you may add to your Unit by unit presentation a flash video with a 360 degree rotation.
or maybe the datas itselfs as links with an Freeware modelviewer. I m not sure about this if this would or could work, liked the elite Sister with theri heavy ornamentet Stormbolters an power Armours most.

Thank you for some info about the current status of the AS mod.

"despite a state of completion close to 99%, the mod was left uncomplete for many reasons.."

Oh common, you killed me with this statement. I really hope that one day the AS mod will be completed. It can take years, I dont mind. So, if you and KRMZ, Pogs and others will team up again in let's say 2015, please finish this awesome mod and release it!

I hope you will post more screens from the AS mod and some concept arts. Thank you in advance. High fortune and Good luck!
