I recall an Indigo League episode of Pokemon where we learned the backstory of James from Team Rocket, where he came form a rich family. And at that dwelling, he had a pet Growlithe named Growly. I dunno if that was your inspiration, but it's neat either way!
And as usual - this is adorable. Giant Pokemon... I knew the GT community would have a field day with this, and I am very much not disappointed with the resulting art.
