Description Some pix of a model I designed and built. Mostly sheet styrene plastic and cast resin parts. The track plates and wheels were cast resin and lots of old model parts. It's approximately 1/35 scale. It's based on a vehicle described in a book by Basil Copper called "The Great White Space," sort of an H.P. Lovecraft pastiche. [link]

Have you considered making the Hadley’s Hope Daihotai Tractor from the movie aliens?, because it's incredibly difficult to actually find a model of one

The only question what are those wheels doing here?Spares?

The vehicle can run on rubber tires if the treads are removed for faster travel on paved roads. (they are a bit tough to see in the pic)

Hello! Thanks for your reply!Yes,that's the idea-transformable worms(threads)two working modes:"rubber tires" for roads and threads(worm-mode) for swamp...Looking for a partner to work on the project

Thank you. I also prefer making up the design so I don't have to match some existing vehicle. I find that is harder work.

Look... it's fine to copy someone's work if that's what gets you off. But for me, it's about creating something new. I agree that it's harder work. Worrying about scale and such is a fucking pain. Takes the fun out of it for me. Your stuff is really good. You should try something colossal. A big diorama or something. Would love to see what you could come up with.

That's a damn cool design. I love how it looks vaguely familiar to something a person might see but at the same time retains a feel unique to itself.

I think the asymmetry gives an otherwise ordinary design a bit of a twist. Thank you.

This is something that actually looks like it's a working feasible vehicle. My only criticism is that I think there should be catwalks on both sides.
And I do agree with franklando in that it does have a certain Gerry Anderson appeal to it.

I see your point but I was very keen on the asymmetrical design for this thing at the time.

This thing kicks so much ass, Adrian. It is so believable, I want to climb in and go for a ride! Preferably on a semi-teraformed Jovian Moon.

Seriously, this is very well thought out and masterfully executed. Sure know your way around a model. Love the details; shovels, spare fuel drums, mg, etc...

Frohickey In reply to Rob-Cavanna [2009-06-13 03:38:13 +0000 UTC]

I'd prefer some place with a breathable atmosphere so you could go out and use that kick-ass .50 cal.

Thank you for the compliments.

BTW, there actually should be a trailer to go with this thing for carrying the treads. The wheels have tires so it can drive on roads and travel faster. Then the treads can be placed on when it has to go off-road.

Rob-Cavanna In reply to Frohickey [2009-06-13 05:22:03 +0000 UTC]

I think a nice semi-breathable atmosphere is best. I grab my dinky oxygen mask from the wall rack before heading out to loiter by the .50cal. Limited atmosphere=less nosy neighbors=more room for me to explore!

Totally understood the function of the road wheels, since you have a couple spares shown clearly, they look capable of running sans-tracks. A trailer does make great sense for stowing the tracks. Might as well tow some kind of camper to boot.

All this talk of removable tracks, reminding me of this cool thing: [link] by

It's a useful vehicle to get around the swamps of Venus.

As for a camper, there is plenty of interior room to sleep and eat. Safer to sleep near the controls if you have to get away fast. Toilet, shower, galley, all the luxuries of a rather cramped home.

The link was very cool. It reminds me of Lady Penelope's car in the live-action Thunderbirds (the way the wheels hung when it was in flight mode)

Thank you very much. The really tedious part was casting all the individual track plates for the treads. Then linking them all together with sectiions of brass tubing.
