Haha thank you! I did my best to try and capture the life of a carnival....and in order to do that, I must have ... a crowd....//dead

Again your attention to detail is PHENOMENAL I love how much I have to focus to take in every part of this beautiful scene! That being said, it's the night sky again that's causing the color clash. Try darkening and desaturating it and I promise the whole picture will really pop! You've got such a beautiful style, keep it up!

Aw thank you! I agree, I should also probably try darkening other elements of the picture as well >< Sometimes I am too scared to make my artwork too dark...I need to learn to get over that fear ;w;

ArcherKasai In reply to FruitTartz [2017-05-03 10:51:30 +0000 UTC]
The desaturation is actually much more important when it comes to color choices. If you look at [CE] Earth Made Flesh , the background still looks purple and fairly vibrant, but if you take a color picker to it, it's actually almost grey in most areas. Something I did while practicing was throwing some of my favorite artists' pieces into photoshop and seeing the colors they picked and how they interacted with each other. You can learn a lot from other artists' techniques and styles xD

This is so good! The detail in the peice is fantastic! The overall scene of the people, the pavement, the stalls, the lights, have so much detail and beautiful features! That really brings the peice to life! The characters in the foreground suit the lively and upbeat feel! Again, this is an absolutely incredible peice with an outstanding amount of detail and beautiful techniques and colouring! Great job!

Heyo, ProjectComment person here!
Very well done on this piece! It isn't too overwhelming, yet it manages to still have that exciting aura about it without the overcrowding of people or stands either. The first thing I noticed was the sign; it looked like glass, which is what interested me and it's unique. As soon as I took a step back and actually looked into it, I realized how much detail and work was put into it as well, so kudos on that. There's always room to improve though!
As I looked closer, the first thing that I noticed was the posture and view of things. The girl (I'm assuming Reishichi?) on the front has an awkwardly flowy dress/skirt, and her hand looks a bit awkward. I think it should be rotated to the back a bit more, but I'm not too sure. Maybe if you extended the hand to where the item she's holding is aligned with her arm, it could help reduce the awkward poses. Her arm also looks a bit too skinny and it looks like her head and neck is leaning back while the rest of her body is placed too forward. The person in the green hoodie also seems to be a bit off in their pose, it's as if they're in a different perspective as well.
On a smaller scale, let's go to anatomy in general. Most of the anatomy is really well done, so nice job! The nose on the silver haired guy in the middle of the picture looks a bit too far out, but that's all I can see in the background. The eyes on the girl in the front look a bit too far spaced, but other than that I don't see anything else. These are really minor errors and I understand with how many details it must of been painstaking for all of this, I'm jealous of your skills haha ouo
Carnivals are usually very bright, and this one is as well so the bright lights and signs are very fitting. However, I would have suggested some dark purple and black accents to go along with the guy on the left (assumin' that's you). He seems mysterious and dark due to his outfit, so maybe you could've put a distant circus tent that's black and purple or a magic shop with those colors.
Carnivals also tend to be a little messy, so instead of the floor being a bit clean and barren you could've added some food wrappers, spilled popcorn, and other trash from food and items.
This is all I could find on this work, and I'm very impressed with this. The amount of detail is absolutely insane and I wish I could put that much into a single picture, haha. It's very good and I hope this helped you! ^^

Hello from a fellow soldier from the comment war!
First glance and I know the efforts you've put in this artwork is not to be underestimated. There is no concealment, no illusion like shadows and blurs that make viewers think "oh, there's more people and stuff up ahead. It's just I can't see them". Everything is perfectly visible, and it makes sense with all those lights shining on every corner of the carnival. It makes your work even more brilliant to know that every character there isn't just some passerby, but those with personalities and relationships that you know.
The design is truly remarkable. Everyone has their own unique attire- formal suits, casual shirts, hoodies, scarves and all that bring out their own traits and preferences. And about the carnival, although it is supposed to be colourful and cheery, it still maintains a purplish theme, giving out an exotic and magical aura.
About the line work and colouring, usually when I make an artwork, I'd think the crowded lines make the whole picture really cool and colours seem to ruin them haha. But here you seem to enlighten me about how to solve the problem. I see there are patterns and textures covering some of the surfaces, like the stalls and especially the ground! The shadings on clothes also help making the colours stand out instead of letting the lines steal their glory.
Perspective-wise, it's like we are being introduced into this carnival, and there're so much more things to explore when we walk along the pathway. I also really admire how you did the architecture- especially the castle-like building on the right. You know how time-consuming it'd be to follow the grid-lines so that the building wouldn't be tilted or simply off. It's cool you can portray all those cylinder towers, windows and those funny patterns by the balcony.
I see some other artworks of yours that also show that you like experimenting with perspective with backgrounds and objects. But other than those, I would like you to try different perspective on the characters as well. What I mean is that besides looking left and right and facing backwards, you can try portraying them looking up, or right-side down, or other similar things that make you draw the jaws and differently. (e.g. www.deviantart.com/art/Head-Pe… )
Artworks like this are what patient and devoted artists make! I wonder how long it took you? But anyway, keep up the nice work!

The first thing I can say is wow. It took you that long to draw it and it's soooooo worth it. You did a spectacular job, and proved that patience is everything. The colours are so bright and vivid, but all the colours match with each other and go with each other, oppose to clashing and looking terrible. I love the insane amount of detail you put into this drawing, it's absolutely stunning. This is by far my favourite piece of art work that I've written a comment for, there's just so much going on and it's breath taking. I wish i could just magically teleport there and stay there! I'm definitely impressed on how you managed to stuff so much into one picture and make it look good. I'm like in love with the random tickets scattered every where!!
I wish i could give you some tips on what to do, but honestly, your artwork looks incredible to me, and I can't really think of anything you might edit. I'm also like super excited, because I noticed you use Clip Studio Paint, which was my very first art program that I got. I definitely see some brushes I've used a lot. It's always nice to find someone who uses the same program as you because then you can learn from them and get inspired. This piece has truly inspired me, and I love it so much!! Have a great day!

Oh man, the colors in this are crazy! In addition, I love how you've illuminated the characters (like the bangs getting light on the girl on the right). I also want to commend you on the detail in this, it's obvious that a lot of effort went into it. At the same time, that detail also takes away from the original piece because with so many things to look at, our eye can't find a place to rest. Composition plays in on this issue as well, because you haven't established a clear focal point (looks like you wanted all the details visible).
A couple of things become clear as well when we compare this to the same situation in real life.
1) The scene is too bright for a night scene.
2) Stars are not this clear when there is so much light
Use references if you’re unsure, for example this: media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/medi…
And look at others who have created similar scenes: rhysgriffiths.deviantart.com/a…
I quickly painted over your piece to show that it'd look just as good with more specific lighting, and be easier to read: postimg.org/image/wp0weeier/

With your skill I’m confident you could create really strong works in no time if you really focus on values and composition. Your lines, shading and colors are working for you at this time and can be ignored for the moment. Remember to check your works in black & white and see if they read at a much smaller size.
I wish you lots of luck ^-^

Drawing a perspective based background with 50+ characters generally gives the work piece a crowded and cluttered feel yet surprisingly enough this one doesn't give that negative atmosphere, rather it exudes excitement and merriment. Wonderful attention to the details and giving each individual tile, mask, stuffed animal, and building have their own sense of purpose. The two characters in the front are superb in the regards of foreshortening and anatomical proportions. The man's coat links are parallel to each other, the folds in all of his clothes are plausible to occur in that reclining stature. Same goes with the girl on the opposing side with the billowing of her skirt. Every piece of art has a bottleneck and ironically enough it's in the details as well though they're minor yet even the smallest mistake can destroy a masterpiece if they're discovered. The first is the sign...it's back cover is the night sky? It has the same color as the sky itself and while it's sprouting little tiny white lights look like they're stars, yet by their positioning compared to the stars themselves they have their own system of alignment but the two seperate light sources are too close and clumped up together. Thus giving the illusion that the the letters FREIT are just floating in the night sky A possible solution is spread out the stars and base of them off of actual constellations to give the viewer a familiar feel of reality. While the shading is great yet because of it gave the two front characters a tired lines under their eyes, it's more prominent in the male's inner corners of his eyes while the girl's is that her bottom portion of her own is aligned about half way of her nose's bridge instead of being closer to the top. Last nitpick bit is the inside lining of her hat interacting with the translucent ticket. For sometime to me the ticket looked like it was opaque like as if you missed it yet giving it later glances the hat's inner lining behind the ticket is just way lower than the actual hat. Other than floating letters, the possibly insomniac male greeter and the off aligned hat's lining this is a great piece of work...an easy assessment of a 4.5 out of 5 star rating.

Aww thank you so much! Even though I love details, I do get concerned about making it seem just plain messy, so I'm glad I managed to avoid that, and still portray the lively atmosphere! As for the sign, it was actually my intention to make it give the initial illusion it was floating xD I initially had a very different scheme for the sign, but it stood out too much, so I wanted to camouflage it into the sky, and give it that ethereal feeling without making it actually transparent to reflect the night sky behind it xD Thank you very much for taking the time to write this comment, and the rating!~

Wow, that’s a really busy picture - you’re either very brave, or insane to take on that challenge!
It’s the sort of drawing I could stare at for hours and still keep finding more details. Everybody has their own way of standing or walking which sets them apart slightly and makes the crowd look really real.
First off though, I see a lot of colour, which really sets that carnival, funfair mood. Perhaps a little too bright in places, with everything shouting for attention, but then that’s exactly how it would feel like to be there! There’s a great variety of stall fronts selling just about everything I could name for the setting, and each has their own style which makes the whole setting feel natural and rounded.
One thing I might suggest is slightly thickening the lines around the inside edges of the gate and foreground characters to make them stand out a bit more from the rest of the image and better show scale and depth. Another way you could do this would be to enhance the contrast in the foreground (and/or perhaps lower it towards the background – though this would lose some of the bright cheery colours).
One last tiny point to note; nobody seems to have a shadow on the stone floor. It’s a minor thing because it took me quite a while to notice, but I think it would be easy to add and just give the image that much more ‘pop.’
As another little note, I love the link you put in your comment, this makes a wonderful opening image for a gallery.
Are they really all your (joint) characters? Wow!

Haha how about a bit of both? LOL XDD Thank you so much for the comment! That made me really happy! It was exactly the kind of reaction I wanted to invoke in the viewer! *u* I do agree that I should make the foreground characters stand out a bit more, but I also wanted to showcase all the details in the background and not have the main characters take too much of the spotlight xD But I think I can definetly keep that tip in mind for other works I make with a similar amount of depth! I also did initially feel like I should have added a shadow on the floor, but when I tried applying it, I wasn't sure where I could have placed the shadows - @ Since there are lights coming from both directions, would the shadows all face inwards ...? But then there are also some form of light coming from the top so I ended up just putting minimal shading xDD Do you have any ideas how I could have done the shadows? Thank you for taking the time to write this critique!~

squanpie In reply to FruitTartz [2017-01-15 13:50:04 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, there's so much light all over the image that I can see it would be tough to get the shadows looking right. Perhaps just darken what you have already a little bit? I'd try picking a direction for the main light (whatever you were thinking of when you did the shading would be a good one) and draw stronger shadows from that direction, but have them fade really quickly perhaps. I don't know though - I guess it's one of those things you'd need to actually try all the options on separate layers and see what works best!
you're welcome!
