Description ...titles? What is this I don't even

It was pretty sunny earlier, so I got to take my new camera out and have a bit of fun with it. It was pretty cool, I'm starting to understand the concepts and practice of manipulating aperture, shutter speed and exposure.

I've always wanted to take a photo somewhat like this, but my P&S obviously just couldn't get a DoF like the DSLR can, so I'm quite excited to experiment with things like what you see above.

Anyway, it's a bit of fun (I am well aware of how cliché these shots are), not much more, but do let me know what you think.

Edit: "Shutter Speed:1717986/2147483628 second" I don't know what that's about.
I'm also quite sick of the quality reduction of jpegs on dA. Dunno how to fix that.

This is a great photo! I can tell you experimented and put a lot of thought into the photo, overall. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/n/n… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title="Nod"/>

One of the first things I noticed was how well the flowers contrast with the background. The white stands out beautifully, to bring our attention to the flowers more quickly. I also like the choice of a very simple background, to not distract the viewer's attention.

I think the shallow DoF is great for this photo, it puts only the foreground in focus and certainly adds a lot of depth to the piece. I wish the brown leaf on the left wasn't also in focus, but that's probably not something you'd intended..

Technically, I don't think this photo is as strong as some of your others. The flowers are overexposed which loses a lot of detail overall. There is also quite a bit of noise/grain in the photo, which I don't know where it came from since your ISO is 100. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="19" height="19" alt="" title="Shrug"/>

The composition bugs me as well. I think you could've shifted the camera down and possibly zoomed out just a tad a as well.

Great work though, I'll be sure to take a look at the rest of your gallery! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thank you so much for a really helpful critique!

I agree - it's not one of my better photos. It was, admittedly, mostly an experiment, and a successful one in that I think I learnt a lot about what not to do with my DSLR in terms of DoF and exposure. Thank you for all your advice in these fields (and composition), I'll definitely keep them in mind next time.

As for the noise, it's something that's bothered me for a really long time. I think I finally figured it out, though. One of my photo editing programs automatically converts all my photos to sRGB without my permission. Worse, it doesn't do a very good job. So that's where the noise comes from.

Thanks again!

this is a good photo for one of your first with a DSLR. it's well composed and the the depth of field is quite nice. I'd experiment with a slightly greater depth of field to keep all the flowers in focus but this is a good shot

Flower photograph is not my strongest but I'll just look at it like I do at any photo.

The colours are very nice and you've been able to take some small details from the flower you focus on. This gives a a beautiful effect to the photo. Very nice! However what I personally think is a little bit annoying is that there's to much of the photo that's unfocussed. I think if you'd make the photo a little bit smaller the flower you focus on will come better to its right. However now it looks as if the flower is flying in the air, which I think is also very nice. Anyway, very good photo! specially if you've only recently started using as DSLR! )

I've had a few comments to the same effect, that the depth of field is TOO shallow for this particular photo. I do agree with you, and it's something to consider next time, especially because this was, in large part, an experimentation with the depth of field.

Thank you kindly.

Lovely shot!
I really like the composition on this. I like how the flowers are framed at the bottom and negative space isn't overbearing. I do wish the flower in the middle was a little more in focus.

First of all, I love flowers, so you have already won me over xD
I love the texture captured in this photo, and the colors are quite beautiful together. My only critique is the blurriness of the surrounding flowers, I think they are too blurry and it would look better if they were more in focus. Otherwise, nice shot

Well, thank you!

This was, in part, an experiment in depth of field, so I definitely see what you mean. I'll take that into consideration next time, thank you.

It's the same with me. I switch to an SLR and sadly for me everything went wrong. But you look like you're doing well. Great job!

FullMetalMono In reply to keeperofthemetalkeys [2011-08-14 00:13:31 +0000 UTC]

I think it's because I've never HAD to learn about aperture and shutter speed and everything else, so trying to learn that while still maintaining the basics of composition and such is quite the challenge!

But thank you!

keeperofthemetalkeys In reply to FullMetalMono [2011-08-14 10:32:41 +0000 UTC]

I see. It's still hard to maintain all of that and get a good shot. I miss the composition while fixing the others.

Looks a little flat maybe if you angled it a little that could help and moved it slightly more away from the middle. Hope that's of some kind of help.

I see what you mean. I think it's, in part, something to do with contrast/brightness as well, but I'll definitely try and focus more on composition next time, thank you.

I'm not advanced enough to write a good critique of your work, but I'll leave a comment instead. I think it's a really good photo, with a classic motive that you captured well. Good angle, composition, nice focus. It's a little bit grainy, though. I think that could be a result of cropping and enhancing the lightness, so I would suggest less postprocessing. Keep it up, you're doing good!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FullMetalMono In reply to NemesisInRed [2011-08-13 07:23:30 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for taking the time to write a helpful comment, even if you say you're not advanced enough.

I do agree with you about the graininess - I think part of this is because dA and jpegs don't seem to be best friends (the photo certainly isn't quite this bad on my computer), but you're definitely right about the post-processing. I did play with colours a fair bit.

Thanks again!
