I think this was a much needed redesign. Mai-Li started out as little more than a bad Chi-Chi clone. But after giving it some thought, I decided to attempt a redesign that aimed to give her a more distinct look with identifiable features.

First off, the Chinese dress had to go. It's pretty and all, but it doesn't quite convey the idea of someone who enjoys martial arts. It's been replaced with a karate gi. This gi is a different purple than what I originally used for her costume. This lighter shade is easier on the eyes and allows the details in her costume to standout better.

The long tights have been swapped out for shorts. I believe this gives off the impression of someone who is energetic, bouncy and flexible.

The Japanese symbol is gone. It was just not needed, and I don't really want to tie her to any nation or race in particular.

She now wears gloves inspired by the type worn by classic Street Fighter characters like Ryu, Ken, and Sakura. If she's going to be punching people, she's got to protect her knuckles, right?

Her shoes have been replaced with these red boots, again, inspired by some seen in the Dragon Ball series. Specifically, Goku's boots during his training with Whis were the inspiration. They're red, just like the gloves. This not only compliments her purple gi, but also makes her fists and feet more easily readable.

Finally, her hair has been tied up, so that it wont get in the while she fights. Makes sense, right?

Character Bio:

Mai-Li is a practitioner of martial arts, such as Judo and Karate. It started out as a way of learning self-defense, but she soon came to enjoy fighting too much to stop there. When something grabs Mai's attention, she fixates on that something with an unwavering drive, for better or for worse. She tends to get "tunnel vision" and is sometimes unable to see the forest for the trees. But other times, her single-minded fixations will motivate her to understand and become proficient at anything she tries. Even if she doesn't succeed, she'll give it her all nonetheless!

She is also very competitive, and absolutely despises failure. Mai tends to become something of a sore loser after suffering defeat, be it in martial arts, games, etc. But when given the chance to cool her head, she will accept her loss and attempt to understand where she went wrong and how she can improve, so as not to fail again.

Her dream is to become a world-renowned martial artist, to be recognized and acknowledged by everyone, and to make her mark in history.
