Description This is something I have my students do.Β  They have to learn to draw generic heads out of their head.Β  This is the more complex one,
There's a more simplified one that they have to learn to draw first.

Hey!
This is super, thank you so much for sharing this here!
Would you by any chance also show the more simplified version you talked about in your comment? :}

Do you find that, especially when starting out, your students are "sided?" As in, much more easily able to draw, say, a left profile than a right profile?

This sort of thing seems like it would help with that.

Hmm... I'm not sure.Β  My students draw from life so I don't see a tendancy to draw only one particular angle.
I'm pretty sure if they were drawing out of their head maybe that might be the case.Β
That's an interesting question, I should pay attention for that

Somewhat related question... the purpose of timing a drawing / time limit exercises is, I'm guessing, to get the artist to make decisions about what is most important to do, and in what order. Β Is that pretty accurate?

Sounds like a great exercise. I've been meaning to ask if you would consider putting up a list of exercises that people could follow in their own time. I've found that although repetition and studying go so far, some directed learning would go much further, and there are almost no good long-term study guides/exercises for artists!

Thanks for the question.Β  I can put something together.
It's nothing special though.Β  A lot of drawing has to do with mileage
after learning the information; much like anything else.Β
The more you advance the more the simple stuff start to make even more sense.

Just like anything there's a point where you hit a wall and there are
some ways around that.Β

I'll try and post something soon

Sounds great I understand that it's all about experience rather than some magical solution but its nice to have some exercises to mix things up and get out if the routine of just drawing, drawing , drawing. Thanks!

What kind of art class do you teach? Cause this is the type of thing I want to learn to do better at. I've been looking around my area and all the art classes seem to be focused on graphics, or abstract, which I'm sure are good classes in itself, but it's not me

I teach Head Painting/ Analytical figure drawing at Otis and
a sculptural anatomy class at CDA in Pasadena.Β

Where are you located.Β  I'm sure you can hunt down some figure drawing
workshops or classes.

Thanks, looks like an interesting class.

East coast of Australia, the problem is it's a small town, so there are plenty of classes in the cities, just not very convenient to get to. I was thinking of trying a class in the holidays though, so hopefully I'll be able to find something then.

Sorry to interject, but I've been in the same boat as you (Bryan teaches anatomy, by the way).
I don't have a lot of options in my area, either, but I did join New Master's Academy about two weeks ago, and it's great. Steve Huston, Glenn Vilppu, Karl Gnass, and Daniel Galieote are all instructors there, which are some of the instructors Bryan studied under. I highly recommend them. I hope this helps.

Thanks Grieverjoe, that looks really helpful I'll be sure to check it out sometime it's a shame they don't seem to have many options around, I guess you've just got to know where to look
Thanks again for the link

Lucky students! My art instructor didn't focus on humans much, let alone heads/faces and angles.
