Rough newsprint has that effect on s harpie.  I use 2-3 sharpies at a time.
As one starts to dry out a bit I use it for halftone and sketching.  When I
cap it and open the next one.  It comes out like normal.  When that sharpie
starts to dry out a bit; I cap that one and open the previous sharpie.  That sharpie is ready
for another round.    For really thin delicate marks I rely on the tip and dexterity.
