Description One of the leading writers of the Heian Period, Sei Shonagon was well known for also having something of a rivalry with Murasaki Shikibu. Her writing style usually involved list taking, and it is with her help that much of the culture of ancient Japan can be understood.

This year, Sei Shonagon was played by the geiko Mameya.

Thank you very much. Actually, because of the poor weather conditions and the camera I used to take this picture, I've often wished to go back to the Jidai Matsuri and take a better picture XD.

She was indeed a great writer. I originally read her book for research purposes, but I ended up loving her sense of humor. Somethings are just timeless .

You might enjoy reading her actual work. She wrote "The Pillow Book" during the 990s, and it is a very enjoyable read. She makes lists, tells stories, gives her opinions on various things, writes poetry, etc. She has a very clear sense of humor that gives the work its timelessness .

I read her book and loved it! It was so random with all the lists and stories. This is a great pic of her

Yes, the woman playing Murasaki Shikibu was sitting right behind Sei Shonagon. You can see part of her red and gold robes on the right .
