Description A friend of mine from a kimono forum we both visit took a vacation to Kyoto, and so I guided her through the Shijo area of Kyoto. We visited Yasaka Shrine, Chionin Temple, Maruyama Park, Gion Kobu, Miyagawacho, Pontocho, and Teramachi in lots of different orders and turn-abouts.

Yasaka Shrine always has a lot of weddings this time of year. The bride is wearing a shiromuku, which is a heavy, white, padded, wedding kimono. The headdress she's wearing is called a Tsunokakushi, or 'horn hider' which is supposed to hide her horns of jealousy at her future husband's cheating ways... because historically no one expected the husband to remain monogamous. That might not hold true now, though.

I've tried on one of those kimonos. They're incredibly heavy and bulky compared to contemporary kimonos.

They are , I have two and I can't hold them up for more than a few minutes. It's because not only are they made of heavy silk that's either heavily embroidered or brocade, the lining is just as heavy, too, and the whole thing is padded on the bottom. It's because the kimono was never designed to worn closed, so it's weighted so as to give an attractive shape around her.
