This is a photo of Wakana's Erikae, her debut as a geiko. Geiko is the Kyoto term for geisha. This photo was taken two years ago, and Wakana has since retired.

Wakana's kimono was one of the more memorable debut ones that I photographed. I had never seen either of the motifs on it used on a geiko's kimono before. It has a scene of karako, essentially Chinese inspired children, and a shishimai, a lion dance. I've since seen both designs used on a geiko's kimono, but Wakana's kimono is still vivid in my memories.

I'm loading this picture as part of the group "Flickr Members for Japan" [link] . We're loading pictures with the links to Japan Relief donation sites from various countries. I took most of my favorite pictures when I was living close to Kyoto, a place that is very dear to my heart, so I thought I would post several of the pictures I had taken of Kyoto's geisha districts. I have to wonder if any of the women there have family from Northern Japan.
