Description I've noticed that I have a tendency to start my comments with the phrase "I haven't put anything up in a while...". This is a bad habit.

This is another courtesan from Yoshiwara, with the status of a zashiki-mochi. A zashiki is sort of like apartments, and the mochi means she has them, so her title states that she's grand enough for the bordello to give her her own set of rooms (which she's expected to lavishly furnish from her own paltry paycheck). An Oiran, a few steps up, would have more, and a heya-mochi, the next step down, would have less. Very low girls wouldn't have their own room but share with other courtesans, and the lowest of the low, nighthawks, weren't even connected to bordellos but just roamed the streets.

I didn't expect her to turn out so colorful when I was drawing her, but more color always seems to be an option for me. I don't think I'm capable of doing anything with dark and somber colors. In case anyone was wondering, those jolly ranchers on her over-robe are supposed to be maple leaves, but I failed. The writing on her kaishi states her name 'Koyou' or 'Scarlet Leaves'.

You know when I look at this drawing I think the colour ads to the sadness Her clothes, her hair, and jewellery are all lavish and beautiful, but her face expression is melancholic, like all of this is not enough to make her happy, or this is not something that makes her happy. So don't worry about the colours it's the expressions that count.

Thank you so much! I'm happy to hear that the inner feelings of this piece were able to come out .

I'm in love of her kiseru and the wafting everywhere, so sensual, but so bad for you!

Well, they probably didn't put tar in their tabacco...

But scenes with beautiful kiseru and the wafting smoke are so beautiful. I love scenese from xxxHolic where Yuuko is surrounded by smoke, even though it is bad for her .

Thank you! I do occasionally draw, but I haven't had the time recently thanks to school (I did this before returning to college). Hopefully I'll get a little more free time soon to finish up some of my projects .

paltry paycheck, I know how it goes when people want you to pay for everything out of one. Though the color combo is interesting, never thought of maple leaves against such a bright ground.

The courtesans had a sad life when their financial situation is considered. The bordellos would keep their courtesans indepted to them by making them pay for things, or guilting them into putting on shows. The best way to keep an Oiran in debt was to have her launch the career of a new top-tier courtesan, and if an Oiran didn't then she was seen to have lesser status than all of the other Oiran. Bordellos were great at needling money out of pathetic paychecks.

I've seen maple leaves on all sorts of backgrounds, from bright pink to inky black. I think they look their most elegant on dark backgrounds, but I wanted this piece to have vibrant colors .

She has a very lovely face. And those things on her robe don't look like Jolly Ranchers to me. They look like maple leaves.

I'm glad they look like leaves to someone . I like how her face came out, I think because she reminds me of someone I know...
