Development sketch for MLP:FiM 2008 pitch bible.Her original name was indeed Appleseed. Ran into some copyright issues, and now she is Apple Bloom. In the original bible, she was solo in her quest for a Cutie Mark, and "seed" signified that she still needed to grow. CMC's Scootaloo and Sweetie Belle were developed later.

Aww. AppleBloom is so adorable. Her bow gives a nice touch. I think she is my favorite of the CMC. The name AppleSeed reminds of AppleBloom's cousin, Babs Seed.

Personally, I'd think Apple Bloom deserves a paintbrush colouring an apple or a wooden hammer with an apple-like nail. Sweetie Belle fits a music if not singing cutiemark and Scootaloo needs a scooter or stunt performer cutiemark. I'm not saying they need these, they're just ideas. vuv

MLP is weird! In terms of Copyright issues. From what I've read Lauren, is that there were a lot of complications with the names and designs of certain characters. Who and why was some one giving you so much trouble with that and when? How is Appleseed copyrighted but not Apple Jack? I don't understand how making such simple names can give creators such as your self such a hard time.Β

There's a seed catalog company called Babs Seed. That's why she has that name. I guess most people don't garden much as a hobby? I was honestly surprised that people didn't get the reference.
It's likely she can't use the Appleseed name because of the American folk hero "Johnny Appleseed." Somebody must have copyrighted that, and since Appleseed was part of the copyright, it wasn't allowed.
