Description Another Blast from the Past, this time from the Mercadian Masques set of Magic, the last set I worked on before leaving WOTC's employ. Another forest to design! Ye Gods. This was also back in the day when I was allowed to spend a day or two on pencil drawings.

I treated this forest like an ocean; it expanded in waves, forming a solid wall of roots several meters thick at the edges. Imagine coming across the plains and encountering a distinct wall where the forest met the grasslands. That was the intent.

I love the flow of form and contrast, those toots are like that famous wave-picture, somehow maybe you are the reincarnation of hokusai P;
happy birthday !

All plain ol' graphite! 2B for the foreground, FB for the mid- and background.

Thank you much! For the foreground I used a 2B; for the background an FB.

Ah, Mercadian Masques... Why can't Wizards put out sets like that anymore?

Oh, right, they're too busy treating their customer base like shit.

great composition and contrast. especially love this forest style you did there years ago. Why don't you create some more these days? are you very busy? what are you working on recently?

Thank you thank you! The focus for concept art has moved away from in-depth studies like this to quickies. Speed equals savings, and producers are there to save every penny they can. A lot of good ideas are getting sidelined in the ever-increasing pace of the rat race.

I'm working on a Secret Project at the moment, meaning you WILL see more stuff like this from me.

can't wait to see it

btw: how long do you have time for a MTG illustration in average?
and what do you get as reference/guideline or how free can you work.
(hope I don't annoy you with those questions)

Not annoyed atall!

It varies wildly. All of the Onslaught and Odyssey pieces took no more than two days apiece. Not a single one of my Ravnica lands came in *under* 40 hours! The subject matter (and the deadline, and my own habits, good and bad) all play a role.

As for how freely I can work, that varies too; if it's a character that's really important to the deck you'll get a lot of art direction.

I'm happiest when I'm given a lot of lead.

Not at all! They had a big layoff in '99 and I was part of it. Me, Fred Fields, Tony Sczudlo (I'm mangling his name, I can't remember exactly how to spell it), Larry Elmore and a couple others. It worked out fine, truly.
