Description When God hath ordained a creature to die in a particular place, He causeth that creature's wants to direct him to that place.
- Liet-Kynes, quoting the Orange Catholic Bible
(Dune by Frank Herbert)

Traditional media (acrylics!) on small piece of hardened canvas (13x18cm)

Yep, I'm new to acrylics and I'd love to get some advice! Β

Really cool. Love the quote from the OCB, I used to really love Dune.

Thank you!Β
I was 15 or 16 when I've read Dune for the first time. I've hated science fiction (the mistakes of being young and stupid, haha) and at first refused to read "some SF shit", but my friend forced me to read it. I cannot thank him enough for that Β
BTW did you also read those Dune prequels and tons of other spin-offs? I've read a few books and it's soooo like fanfiction. I just checked Goodreads - lol, Brian Herbert produced 22 Dune books xDΒ

The Herbert books are decent.Β  The spinoffs are.......erm........

I enjoy science fiction more than fantasy these days. Maybe I just got burned out on fantasy as a teenager? I dunno.Β  Been reading a lot of horror lately too.

This is quite the piece. I would agree with wyrmfed though; thicker paint, less canvas, and bring out the birds a bit more. But the overall feel worked.

That red into magenta background is dazzling. Great scene and I like the quote.Β

If you want your acrylic paintings to resemble your digitals, I'd suggest going heavier on the paint. There's too much canvas showing through for my taste, looks like you were running out of paint :]Β
I used to mix my acrylics quite thick, but if you experiment with your water mixture you can find a viscosity you enjoy.Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Fyrrea In reply to nilwilnil [2017-04-30 09:35:31 +0000 UTC]

Or maybe my acrylics are just crappy and cheap? (They are!) Could it be the reason? I used almost no water, only to wet the brush and to clean it before changing paint colors.Β
I struggled especially with the yellow paints. They were freaking invisible after drying and I apllied them a few times with no satisfying result -_-Β
Well, I have a lot to learn but I think it's going to be a fun journey Β

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

nilwilnil In reply to Fyrrea [2017-04-30 17:00:50 +0000 UTC]

Well, that's one reason I haven't painted much traditionally lately, materials get expensive (so are computers I suppose).Β

Pay attention to the clarity of the paints too. Some are made more opaque, some more translucent. That might be part of the problem.Β
I was left with a tube of translucent black at one point, straight out of the tube it would barely show.Β
The translucent paints are good if you use a glazing technique; the opaque paints are good for .Β .Β . whatever the opposite of glazing is :]
I'm really out of practice, but that's my two cents.Β

Looks wonderful, the one piece of advice I can give is, don't be afraid of using more water on your brush to smooth out your color before you change to another color. Also, let your paint dry before you added anotherΒ layer as you add details.
